Above the Annual Average in Wellington

A DRY DECEMBER

Although very little rain fell in Wellington after November 18—the hist shower of the year being during the right of December 11 —the rainfall recorded at the meteorological station at Kelburn during 1934 was about two inches more than the annual average and about 5J inches' more than for 1933. ' -

This was largely due to the fact that during the six mouths. May to October, last year, the rainfall measured 29.65 inches, compared with 24.16 inches during the corresponding period of 1933 and an average of 23.22 inches for the corresponding period of previous years. Actually, more than two-thirds of the rainfall for 1934 was recorded in the six months. May to October. Hain was recorded on 149 days last year, ns against .150 days in 1933,‘but on only 20 days during the last quarter, compared with 27 days during the tinal three months ot 1933

The following table compares last year’s rainfall, month by month, with that for 1933 and the average for previous years:—

During June-July-August last year, rain fell on 60 days out of 92, the total for the quarter being 16.06 inches, compared with 13.18 inches for the corresponding period of 1933 and an average of 12.72 inches in previous years. The wettest month last year was October, during which 6.85 inches was recorded, this being more than three times the rainfall for October, 1933, and twice as much as the average for October. As will be seen from the comparative table, November and December in 1933 and 1934 registered rainfalls much below the average. There was slightly more, rain during November of 1934 than forthe same month of 1033. Most of the rainfall during last November fell on' two days, 119 points on November 13 and'34 points on November IS. From the latter date to the end of the year unusually dry conditions obtained, the only measurable rain being 5 points recorded during the night of December 11.
