Mrs. J. G. Coates and the Misses Sheila and Barbara Coates, who were at Auckland for the Royal visit, returned to Dargaville at the end of last week. Mrs. Coates expected to Ire at Auckland again for New Year’s Day. The Misses Z. and 13. Chapman, Lower Hutt, are spending a week or two at Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Gyles, Karori, are visiting Christchurch for the chess congress. Mrs. 13. M. Clark has returned to Christchurch from a week’s holiday at Wellington.
Miss Helen Montague, who spent Christmas at Auckland, is now staying at Dargaville. Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Lynch, Timaru, are visiting Dr. and Mrs. P. P. Lynch, Khandallah. Miss Patricia Marshall and Mr. R. Marshall, Lower Hutt, are the guests of Mrs. Arkwright, Overend, Marton, for the New Year races.
Mr. L. D. Duff, Opotiki, with Mrs. Duff and their two children, spent Christmas with Mrs. Duff, sen., at Greytown, and have how returned home. Miss Phyllis- Richards, Christchurch, will pass through Wellington this week on her way to siiend a holiday at Palmerston North and in Hawke’s Bay. Mr. and Mrs. W. Carwell Cooke and their two children, Kiritaki, Dannevirke, who spent Christmas with Mrs. Cooke’s mother, Mrs. Duff, Greytown, have returned home.
Mrs. Rhodes-Williams, Christchurch, will represent the New Zealand Croquet Council at the South Island tournament, which begins at Dunedin tomorrow.
Dr. and Mrs. Ewart Guthrie, Johannesburg, South Africa, who are at present visiting Russell, are making a two months’ tour of New Zealand on account of Dr. Guthrie’s health. Mrs. M. Turnbull, Wellington, and Miss Ival Heywood, Eastbourne, are at Christchurch, where they attended the wedding of Surgeon-Lieutenant J. A. Page to Miss Alison Bell, which took place yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Phelan and Miss Barbara Phelan, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lonsdale, are spending a few weeks at Muritai. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Phelan are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Phelan there. Miss Brenda Bradley, who arrived from England recently, to join her brother, Mr. J. Bradley, is spending the Christmas and New Year holidays at Wellington. She and her brother will return to Christchurch early in the New Year, and will spend about six months in New Zealand before leaving for their home in England. Mrs. W. N. Corbet, who has been selected as one of the New Zealand team to compete in the international croquet .tournament to be held at Melbourne. was entertained by members of the Punga Croq.net Club, Dunedin, and presented with a mascot in the shape of a gold marigold set in a circlet of blue enamel. Mr., and Mrs. J. F. St. B. Barclay, formerly of New Zealand, are living at Somersbury Manor, Ewhurst, Surrey, which was a shooting box of Henry VII, and carries with it the privilege of the Lord of the Manor of presenting to the King-a, Somersbury (local) rose every year. Mr. Barclay is now managing" a branch firm of Sir Henry Lunn, Ltd., the travel agents. Among those who visited Wellington last week as passengers in the liner Orohsay were Mr. and Mrs. G. InglisHudson, Sydney. They were accompanied by Mrs. Olding, also of Sydney. Colonel Olding was to have been a member of the party, but he was unable to travel on account of military duty. Another member of the party was Miss Tatham.
The many New Zealanders who remember Sir E. Haviland Hiley and Lady Hiley will be interested to hear that their only daughter, Jean Philippa, was married on December 1 at Great St. Mary’s, Cambridge, to Philip Adlington, elder son of the late Rev. G. Broke and Mrs. Broke, of Hole Hale Hall, Thetford, Norfolk. The Dean of Wells officiated at the choral ceremony, assisted by Canon W. B. Docker.
It is not generally known that one of the Duchess of Kent’s four godmothers is Queen Mary. The Queen’s christening gift to her godchild was a silver mug and bowl and spoon, which were a great delight to the little girl, and in these her porridge and cream were served every day. When she was very naughty her meal was served in Another bowl, for to be deprived of Queen Mary’s present made her feel her punishment very keenly. Visiting Wanganui for the North Island croquet tournament are Mrs. W. H. Walker and Mrs. E. G. Anstice, Palmerston North, who are the guests of Mrs. W. Jarvie, St. John’s Hill. Mrs. Tortonson, Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs. L. E. Bassett, Wanganui. Mesdames Boocock, Bock, and Lowery are Wellington visitors to Wanganui, the guests of Mrs. R. Lilburn. Mrs. Sandford, Raetihi, will be staying with Mrs. Lynch, Springvale, Wanganui, for the croquet tournament. Other visitors will be: Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gibbs, Patea ; Mesdames Simpson, J. P. Petrie, and R. D. Gambrill, and Mr. C. Bryan, Palmerston North; the Rev. Mr. Burgin, Mrs. L. A. Bailey, Mangaw.eka; Mesdames Pltcaithey and R. Watkins (Dominion handicapper), Hastings; Mrs. Stringer, Whangarei; and Mesdames Kebblewhite, , Hawken, and Margison, Hamilton.
