The Open Exhaust
Sir, —There are many of your readers who would be pleased to read the article by “H.P.” in your Friday’s issue on the open exhaust question. It is not only in the Oriental Bay district that residents are annoyed almost beyond endurance by the conduct of many young men, who race along our streets every evening on motor-cycles with the open exhaust much in evidence.
At Island Bay throughout the summer evenings residents are annoyed by these youths who patrol our streets, often in pains; a favourite stretdh is a triangle comprising -the Parade, Esplanade and Trent or Brighton Streets. A nice stretch of bitumen, which they traverse at a great rate with deafening noise.
I was in London in 1029 when the London County Council—l think this was the authority—brought in the by-law in regard to motor noise abeyance; within a week what had been a nightmare was almost completely stopped; not only was the motor-cycle nuisance abated, but the blowing of motor horns and rattle of decrepit cars was no more. Surely our city councillors must be aware of the nuisance that occurs nightly. It is to be hoped l they may be induced to take action. —I am, etc., W.M.B. Wellington, December 29.
