World Events of 1934.— (1) H.R.H. Prince George toured South Africa. (2) King Leopold of the Belgians and his consort. Queen Astrid, who succeeded to the Belgian throne on February 18, King having been accidentally killed while mountaineering. (3) President Hindenburg, of Germany, died August 2, and was buried at Tannenberg. (4 Herr Hitler, leader of the Nazi Party, became President and Chancellor of Germany for life, the appointment being confirmed by plebiscite on August 19. (5) Rainbow (left) defeated Endeavour (right) in a series of races at Newport, United States of America, in September to retain Americas Cup for United States of America. (6) Queen Mary, on September 26, launched the world’s largest liner Queen Mary, built for the Cunard-White Star Company on the Clyde. (7) Commander Evangeline (rig ) elected leader of the Salvation Army on September 2, vice General Higgins (left). (8) The engagement of Prince George, Duke of Kent, to Princess Marina of Greece, was announced by H.M. the Kin.. on August-28, the wedding taking place on November 29. (9) King Alexander of Yugoslavia (left) and M. Barthou, French Foreign Minister, assassinated at Marseilles on October 9. (10) Duke of Gloucester talking to Mr. J H. Thomas at Croydon aerodrome on September 4 before leaving on tour of Australia and New Zealand.(11) Mr. C. W. A. Scott chief pilot of the De Havilland Comet which arrived at Melbourne on-October 23 (l2) to win the MacRobertson Air Race held in conjunction with the Melbourne centenary celebrations. (13) Mr. C. T. P. Ulm (centre) Mr. J. L. Skilling (left) and Mr. G. S. Littlejohn, lost at sea on December 4, while flying from Oakland (California.) to Honolulu en route to Auckland and Australia.
