THE RACING WORLD
RESULTS & NEW YEAR PROSPECTS Final Day at Manawatu; Aga Khan’s Handicap EIGHT MEETINGS FOR TO-MORROW Duke of Gloucester Will Attend Marton Fixture (By “The Watcher.”) The summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Chib was concluded at Awapuni on Saturday, in fine, warm weather. The track was again firm and fast. The principal event, the Liverpool Handicap, was won by Aga Kahn, and the sprint fell to the Night Raid horse Wheriko, who was having only his second start in New Zealand. Inflation again revealed his class to win a double at the meeting by beating the favourite, Cuddle, in the Clandeboye Handicap. Racing .t'o-morrow will be held at many centres throughout the Dominion: at Auckland, Stratford, Marton, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Greymouth, Waikouaiti, and Wyndham. The lastmentioned two meetings are one-day fixtures, but all the other meetings will be concluded on Wednesday, when the Oainaru meeting will take place, and the Southland meeting will open, to conclude on Thursday. Main interest again centres at Ellerslie, where the Great Northern Derby will be decided, also the Racing Club Handicap. At Stratford, Marton and Wairarapa, the principal event is the Cup, and an added and important attraction at the Marton meeting will be the presence, and the riding in a race, of the Duke of Gloucester. y Fields at all the majority of meetings are good, and with the continuance of the summer weather tracks will be hard and fast.
AWAPUNI RESULTS Handicap to Aga Khan INFLATION’S DOUBLE Sprint Won By Wheriko (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Palmerston North, December 20. There was a fair attendance for the final day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s Christmas meeting, but Saturday is not a half-holiday at Palmerston North, and it was therefore really a second off d'ay for the club. The favourites also did not fare too well, Hororata being the only straight-out first choice to win, and there was a slight decrease in the totalisator returns compared with the third day hist year, the figures being £13,079, as against £14,336/10/-, a decrease of £357/10/-. The total for the meeting was £49,510, compared with £52,090, a decrease of £2580. Last year the win and place system was in operation, while this year the club had the single pool. W. J. Broughton rode three winners. r«st Rider Won. As is usual in races for apprentice riders, the winner turned up in the besthandled horse, Alby, who waited on Royal Record and Wasteland to the straight, and was then ridden out with much more ability than was shown on Wasteland, while Royal Record weakened. Balbus, last early, finished fourth. The winner carried a 51b, penalty to secure the services of Maekinnon, but it proved worth while. Bold Jim ecored another highweight win in convincing style.' He led all the way, and, running out the journey solid-
ly, won fairly comfortably from the second favourite. Sir Spear, who was always in a handy position, but was unable to make much impression on the winner. Royal Papa came from a long way back for third. The favourite, Round Score, failed to improve. Hororata Too Good. Hororata, a warm favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, might easily have missed, as she drew No. 1 and failed to jump away. On the turn she was outside three or four horses, but she was still able to go on, and beat the pacemaker, Fulojoy. They finished well clear of the others. They were a poor lot, but Hororata is speedy. Aga Klian's Luck Cliauges. Aga Khan led all the way in the Liverpool Handicap, and, setting a sound pace, lasted to beat West Tor narrowly utter the latter had appeared to get the upper hand. West Tor was in behind the winner throughout, and had every chance Io beat him. Passion Fruit ran a creditable race for third, but never looked like improving, while the favourite, 'Tout le Monde, was never a possibility after he missed a clean'jump out. Red Sun never got into the picture, which was not surprising after his'escapade the first day. Miladi finished very strongly into fourth place, and should whiTsoon. The winner deserved his turn, which was well overdue. Land Tax in Form. The favourite in the hack sprint, Sunny Maid, endeavoured to lead all the way, but she was beaten entering the straight, where Land Tax, who had lain in behind, got up on the rails and took charge. She was hotly challenged in the last half-fur-long by Colenso and Tupurangi, but they failed to get up, the latter just heading Colenso. Invoice was fourth, after looking a possibility at the distance. Tupurangi came from the rear of the field and showed greatly improved form, but with luck at a critical stage Colenso would have won. This in no way detracts from the merit of the' winner’s performance. On her day she is a very smart hack, and S. Anderson is her most suitable jockey. Inflation’s Double. Inflation won his double in classic style again. He lay in behind Cuddle to the straight, and when he challenged there was only a brief struggle before he asserted supremacy. They drew right away from their opponents. Inflation again pulled up very lame, but so long as he can be got to the post he will be dangerous. Cuddle was not disgraced, for she carried a substantial weight. The winner paid a good price considering his form and class, no doubt owing to the fact that T. Webster did not ride him. Nobody could have improved on Ridgeway. Nightguard showed a flash of improvement. Wheriko’s Sprint. Wheriko scored his first New Zealand success by taking the open sprint in decisive style. He lay in the rear for half a mile, and then ran past his opponents in the straight in solid style. Bodyline may have troubled him had his rider not lost an iron and steered right into the leader, Cullus, when making his run. The winner is a big horse and a fine galloper, but unfortunately is touched in the wind. He is, however, improving in this respect. The favourite, Cawbeen, was well beaten. Successful Riding Change. Miss Hushabye, always well placed behind the pacemaker. Secrecy, to the straight, then took charge and fought off a strong challenge by State Bank. The hot favourite, Diagano, was not well placed early, but he finished with a strong run right on top of the leading pair, and again looked unlucky. Miss Hushabye, however, had shown good form during the meeting, and the change of riders in her ease resulted in the requisite improvement. Full Throttle was well backed, but he had every chance after lying handy to the winner in running. State Bank is showing definite improvement, and the stable nearly brought off a surprise double with him and Tupurangi. EVENTS TOMORROW Derby Day at Ellerslie WEATHER STILL FINE Reviews of Form and Prospects Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 30. The weather remains brilliantly fine and unless there is rain, which seems as far away as ever, the course will be hard for the third day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie on Tuesday. The fields are well balanced, and although they are not large they should provide some excellent racing. | The Auckland Racing Club Handicap bears a very open aspect. King March has come through his two races at the meeting splendidly, and looks a picture. Vintage and Rocket worked nicely over a round on the No. 2 grass this morning in 1.45 4-5. the last seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5. Both appear none the worse for their races in the Auckland Cup. The same applies to Grand Jury and Spiral, who went five furlongs in good style in 1.2 4-5. finishing together. Horses likely to be well supported include :— 12.2 —Ellerslie Handicap: Nun Nicer, Maroha and Miss Lu. 12.42— New Year's Hurdles: Thespis, Verden, and Sandy.. AT TAUHERENIKAU Good Field For Cup Race FORM AND PROSPECTS (By “The Watcher.”) The majority of Wellington racegoers will no doubt be attracted to the Wairarapa meeting, where, apart from the actual racing, a pleasaut day can be spent in picnic fashion in the native bush on the course. Adequate facilities are available for transport both by rail and road. Oue or two of the fields are poorly filled, but there is plenty of form from Manawatu, and backers should not go far astray. Single pool wagering will operate. In the Electric Handicap, the lightweights, Cawbeen and Navaho, may be fancied, .especially Cawbeen, after her Manawatu showings, but the favourite is likely to be Souchong, who represents stronger class. There is also the possibility that he will be ridden by T. Webster. The runners in the Featherston Hack do not represent very good form. Following upon the Manawatu meeting, the best backed are likely to be State Bank and Inveresk. Hororata stauds out in the Nursery Handicap, though Fulojoy may again give her a race. The others have insufficient form to justify any prospects against this pair. The Wairarapa Cup promises to be a good race, for (here are several of the runners with good recent, and winning,, form. They include Autopay, Hnzoor (who is bound to improve with his race in the Manawatu Cup). Inflation, Eminent. Fracas, West Tor, Red Sun, and Hatnma. It will net be nu easy task for backers, but igell backed runners may include Fracas and Inflation. Pladie’s success at Manawatu draws attention to his prospects in the Champion Hack, but he will not have the ser-* vices of L. G. Morris this time. Te Ua. Dorado, Sunce, Knock Out. Umpire, and Lord Hereford are possibilities. The best backed may be Umpire and Sunec. Fracas will touch a short price if she starts in the Wardell Handicap. In her absence Pladie may be preferred to La Poupee. In tlie Whareknka Hack, Acceptable showed pace at Manawatu. and will improve. while Full Throttle, De Trop, Dollar B.ill, Owlsgleam. and Tupurangi all have form. lilost money may go on Tupurangi .(if absent. De Trop). and Full Throttle. The novices include form horses in Owlsgleam, Otauru King. Tupurangi, and Inveresk, and there is always a chance that some of the unknown quau- .
titles may spring a surprise. Favourites may bo Tupurangi and Owlsgleam, or Inveresk. The card' is as follows: — 11.45— ELECTRIC HANDICAP, of £lOO. Five furlongs.
System. “System No. 1” forwards the following form horses for Wairarapa:—First race, Navaho. Second race, Bay Area or Confiscation. Third race, Hororata or Fulojoy. Fourth race, Autopay or Fracas. Fifth race, Dorado or Safari. Sixth race, Fracas. Seventh race, De Trop or Tupurangi. Eighth race, Darecourt or Tupurangi.
AT HAWKE’S BAY
Fields of Local Horses PROSPECTS ON FORM (By “The Watcher.”) Fields at Hawke’s Bay are mostly composed of local horses, but they are good and should provide interesting racing:— The following may be well backed in their engagements:— Hastings Maiden: The Grasper, Artless, and Aubretia. Otatara Highweight: Royal Banquet and Kahunoke. Havelock Flying: Asturisca, Queen's Pride, and Lavina. Juvenile Handicap: Thane and Quake. President’s Handicap; In the absence of Cuddle, Blue Boy. Waipatu Handicap: Hest and Sunny Song. Stewards' Handicap: Slippery and Speed. * The card is as follows :—

MARTON RACES ’ F Duke to Ride in Bracelet FORM FROM MANAWATU (By “The Watcher.”) Good fields have accepted for Marton, where the’ club, being favoured by the presence of the Duke of Gloucester, should have a very successful gathering. Single-pool betting will be in operation, with three divideuds in fields of nine or • over. Form points to Sir Spear and Benedictine in the hurdle race. In the Trial Plate, Hunting Queen is not eligible. Dawn Princess, Martiancss, King’s Lancer, and Leprechaun have shown form. The best backed may be Dawn Princess, Martianess, and Leprechaun. The Ladies’ Bracelet promises to be an interesting and spectacular event, as the Duke is to ride Black Man, while Captain Curtis will be on Tranquillity. There will be no doubt about the Duke’s mount being the popular pick, but he will not have an easy race. The Ark and Royal Papa will run well. It would be a 1 humorous touch to see the Duke defeated by Royal Papa, and on Manawatu running there is more than a good prospect of it coming to pass. In the New Year Hack there are several form prospects from Awapuni. The best of them may be Balbus, who ran most consistently last’ week, and he and King Thomond or Poniard may be the favourites. The Marton Cup prospects, from last week's running include Passion Fruit, Cuddle, Miladi, Pango, Stitch, Tout le Monde, and Miss Hushabye. Miladi is a definite possibility on her finishing run . of Saturday last. The best backed may be Cuddle, Tout le Monde, and Miladi (or Stitch). ’ Ability to begin will tell in the Juvenile Handicap, and in this respect Palm, Invoice, Ilias, and possibly Matrimony will be fancied. The best backed may be Palm, Invoice, and Ilias. Farmer will have to improve to beat either Wheriko or Cadland in the sprint, but he is a possibility. Stitch, Arena, Wasteland, and Bodyline are all possibilities on recent form. The favourites may be Cadland, Wheriko, and Stitch. Form horses in the concluding event are Limulus,Sunny Maid, Arauline, Alby, , Abbey Feale, Seerecy, and Dialogist. The best backed are likely to be Limulus, Arauline, and Sunny Maid. The card is as follows: —
STRATFORD EVENTS Useful Fields Engaged PROSPECTS REVIEWED With a view of assisting owners financially, the Stratford Racing Club dfU not close their acceptances till form of horses had been revealed by racing at Christmas, hence the acceptances received for the first day of the club’s meeting are quite up to expectations, and there will be few scratchings. That promising young hurdler Tarffiia (10.2) is engaged in the Ohura Hurdles, although through an omission his name does not figure in any of the telegraphed lists. Tareha gave an impressive display to win at Woodville recently, and must run well to-morrow. For a maiden jumper Ythan pleased at New Plymouth, and the long straight should suit Revision. Reipar (now trained by 11. Johnstone at Wanganui) showed very promising form at the spring meeting at Marton, and should be well fancied for the Trial Stakes. Harbour Bridge had not the best of luek at Taranaki, and may do better in this event, but Panloff is the one that may appeal, as the useful Harvest Moon was lucky to beat him in the Tikorangi Stakes last Wednesday. Following his double win at the Taranaki meeting last week, Tahurangi will appeal for fhe Tariki Hack. He stays on well, but 9.0 on this difficult track may stop him. St. Clara ran only once last week, and as she now meets Tahurangi on considerably better terms St. Clara must be dangerous. Of the others, Sunny Downs may receive support. In a limited turf career this gelding has often displayed promising form, and, having won at Waipa recently, is now at his best. For a £3OO prize, the class engaged in the Stratford Cup is indeed weak. Aga Khan made a good showing at Awapuni, and in ti slow-run race would take some beating, Bugle Call won the principal event on the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting last week, and Davistock did likewise on the second day. Of these two performances, that registered by Davistock was much more impressive, and as he is at the top of his form it points strongly to his being favourite. Freisland impressed at Taranaki last week, and if produced for the Eltham Hack he will touch a short price. Ouewhetu put up a creditable performance at Feilding < last meeting, and finished well to win over seven furlongs at New Plymouth last Thursday. Chikara on her home track may also be supported. She certainly won decisively last week. Lucidus won both of his races at New Plymouth with good finishing runs, but the seven-furlong journey and uphill straight at Stratford will make his contract in the Midhirst Handicap much more difficult. Hacks like Diagano and Merry Way may be well backed. Quite a good class is engaged in the Railway Hack, and as many of the acceptors have recent form betting may take a wide range. Courtega and Dancing Lady both won last week, but the minor performances put up by Lia Fail and Chief Marionette suggested good support for them. If reserved for the Juvenile Handicap, Freisland will command strong support, while his stable-mate, the two-year-old Lowenberg, is undoubtedly promising. The card is as follows: —
DAME. MOAB FIRST Carrington Stakes Win (Received December 30, 6.30 pirn.) Sydney, December 30. The Tattersail’s Club races were held at Randwick in showery weather. The going was fair. Much interest was taken in Winooka’s first run after his return from America. Winooka bounded out in front and led for five furlongs, when he was overtaken and finished in the middle of the field. He was not knocked about, and, considering the weight he was carrying, the effort was impressive after his long spell from racing. The following was the result of the CARRINGTON STAKES. Six furlongs. DAME MOAB, 7.5 .... (Lightfoot) 1 VISTA, 7.12 (W. Cook) 2 HIGH, 7.6 (Hickey) 3 All started. . Length; length. Time, I.ll}. Nightjar was unplaced in the Maiden Handicap, first division, and Limoux third in the second division. Loud Applause was unplaced in the Juvenile Stakes, Palady unplaced in the Novice Handicap, anil After Money unplaced in the Pace Welter.
