FLOODED MINE
Huge Pumping Task Begins The huge task of emptying the open cut at the Yallourn browl coal mine of its 4,500,000,000 gallons of flood water has been begun by the State Electricity Commission engineers. Pipes have been laid, and the cut will be made to drain off about 20 feet of the water, but this will be the merest beginning, as the cut is flooded to a total depth of 250 feet. Huge pumps mounted on bogies and lowered by cable, to enable them to retain touch with the receding water, will be used for the major dewatering operations. About 35.000 tons of reserve coal are still available, but it is not likely that all of it will be needed, as the reconstruction of the railway bridge across the Latrobe River, giving access to the deposits of the old brown coal mine, is nearing completion.
More than 700 men arc employed oa continuous shifts repairing flood damage at the mine. Apart from this damage. additional direct costs to the Electricity Commission as a result of the flood arc etsimated ar £5700 a week.
