The story of some Corsican fishermen who have just returned to Rome from the inland of Monte Cristo has revived popular interest in Dumas’s tale of hidden treasure. The fishermen relate how while sheltering from a gale on the shores of the island they came upon several gold coins of the eighteenth century near the ruins of the watch tower. This is not apparently the first discovery which has seemed to authenticate the Monte Cristo legend. The quests for treasure have been renewed at frequent intervals, and in the light of the most recent discovery, which is thought to provide a more definite clue than any previous one, an organised search expedition is under consideration.
