SIX SOCIALISTS

“Problems of the Socialist Transition,” a symposium (Loudon; Gollancz). Contributed to by six of the bestknown disciples within the exclusive body known as the British Socialist League, this book is a simplified and condensed statement of the immediate aims of the organisation. With the exception of those who would dismiss entirely the political claims of socialism, it is a statement that should not be ignored. by the general reader. On it is the stamp of constitutionalism and of the Left Wing of official British Labour. The “Problems” are under the following heads: —“Democracy—Real or Sham?” by Sir Stafford Cripps, K.C., M.P., chairman of the National Council of the Socialist League; “The Working-class Movement ■ and the Transition to Socialism,” by G. D. H. Cole; “Trade Unionism: Some Problems and Proposals,” by Harold E. Clay; “The Co-operative Movement and the Fight -for Socialism,” by William Mellor; “What of the Professional Classes?” by Louis Anderson Fenn; and “The Class Struggle,” by J- F. Horrobin. The final chapter is "Forward to Socialism,” a statement of approach and policy approved by the National Conference of the Socialist League in May last.
