A PANTHER’S LIFE STORY
“Panther,” by R. L. Haig-Brown (London: Cape. 7/-). There is a fascination about tales of wild animals told by those who know their subject thoroughly.- This book is the life story of a Vancouver Island panther, and in his vivid account the author draws on the knowledge gained during five years in the woods on the island and on expeditions in company with a man whom he describes as the greatest of all panther hunters. Son of a giant among panthers, J<iyu followed in his father’s footsteps to become lord of his domain. His life of adventure in the ceaseless conflict of the wilds is set down from the time of his birth. Despite narrow escapes Ki-yu gradually learned to fend for himself. With age came great strength, and, perhaps of more importance. great cunning and understanding of the ways of men. His successful forays to the farms on the edge of the forest made him an object of particular attention for the cleverest hunter in the region, and, apart from fights to the death with other panthers challenging his mastery, his life resolved itself into a succession of battles of wits with the hunter and his dogs. This battle Ki-yu may be said to have' won, for his end came not at the hands of man. ‘ Glimpses of the lives of many forest animals form the background of this convincing study. iiciiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiaiiiiniiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiit
