THE RACING WORLD
FAVOURITES FAIL Auckland Second Day SYNAGOGUE’S MILE Summer Cup to King March Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 20. The Auckland Racing Club was again favoured with fine weather for the second day of its summer meeting. The Ellerslie track was very fast, and the attendance fair. The totalisator handled £33,867 10/-, as against £30,085/10/- for its corresponding day last year, when it rained, an increase of 1f3782. The total for the two days is £109,141/10/-, compared with £99,300/10/-, an increase of £9841. Chromadyne fell in the Ponsonby Hurdles, injuring a shoulder, and had to be destroyed. Sir Vai was bumped at the start of the Waitemata Handicap, receiving 'a broken pelvis,' and was also destroyed. First favourites again fared badly, Diatomous being the only one to score. However, most of the winners were solidly supported, and there were no real surprises. King March, securing a lucky run on the rails, finished brilliantly to win the Summer Cup, and Synagogue, with the better of the luck in the running, narrowly defeated Gay Blonde, upon whom A. Tinker did not excel himself, in the. King’s Plate. - The contest indicated that Synagogue is the better stayer, and his prospects in the Great Northern Derby appear very rosy.' A One-horse Race. The three-year-old Ooronis, third fancy to Tunneller and Nun Nicer, made apnehorse race of the Fergusson Handicap. She led all the way, and after being five lengths clear pf The Khedive and Tunneller at the turn, won by two lengths from Nun Nicer, who stayed on solidly to beat Tybalt by a head. Tunneller was fourth, followed by The Khedive and Merry Lap. . : ■ .. . Ooronis claimed a slb. allowance, and confirmed her good form of the first day. Nun Nicer and Tybalt ran solid races, the latter doing very well for a novice. Tunneller had every chance, and The Khedive’s rider lost an iron. Kurapae wag left at the post, and Courthaven was badly away in an uneven start. ■ A Fine Contest. Only*four started in the king’s Plate, but it was a fine contest, Synagogue just outstaying Gay Blonde. . Lady/Kyra led early, but at the end of two furlongs Namakia was in the lead. With three furlongs ••■overed Synagogue and Gay Blonde ran up on the .outside of Namakia and the three were almost abreast entering the straight. Gay Blonde appeared to have a slight advantage with half a furlong to go, but Synagogue would not be denied and beat her by a head. Lady Kyra was n length and a half away third, just beating Namakia. There was little in it and the run of the race was sufficient to turn the scale in favour of Synagogue, Gay Blonde be-
ing at the disadvantage of being outside two most of the way. Hurdles Record. A course record of 3.38 3-5 for two miles over hurdles was established by King Win in accounting for the Ponsonby Hurdles from Verden, the outsider of the field, who paid a good price foe second. Illuminate led for a mile, when Verden dashed to the front to lead into the straight five lengths clear of Illuminate and King Win, who were the only ones close enough to have chances. Verden tireck in the run from the last fence and King Win, who was patiently ridden, beat him decisively. Hounslow plodded on to get third and Sandy Dix was fourth, with the others well beaten, Illuminate tiring quickly in the last furlong. Verden might have won if he had not been rushed to the front quite so soon. Chromadyne fell at the third fence, and breaking a bone in his shoulder was destroyed. , A Great Finish. Necks separated the placed horses in a great finish in the Summer Cup, King March finishing brilliantly on the rails to win after being last when the field had covered two furlongs. Prince Colossus and Solarium made all the running, arid they were the leaders into the straight from Pomp, Cricket Bat, Kiltowyn and Southdown, with King March in the ruck. Solarium was still in front near the post, and King March just beat him in the last little bit. Kiltowyn finished fairly well on the outside, and Hushing ran a surprisingly good race for fourth. Next to finish were Pomp, Prince Colossus and King Musk. Cricket Bat and Southdown failed to run on at the finish, while King’s Knave and Caliente were unable to extricate themselves from the rue'k. It was a fastrun race, which was right into the hands of a stayer like King March, who was fortunate to get such a fine run through in the straight. Favourite’Misses Place. Galilee was favourite for the Criterion Handicap, but, after running a good race, she found her weight too much and missed a place. Penelope made most of the running and she was still in front inside the distance, where she was challenged by Gay Sheik, Round Up, and Bun Fight. The lastnamed finished best to win nicely from Gay Sheik, who just beat Round Up for second. Penelope, who tired in the last little bit, was right up fourth, and Galilee was fifth. Bun Fight finished very resolutely and made amends for her bad luck on the first day, when she appeared unlucky to lose. Round Up was- a good way batik early, but came home well on the outside, missing second only through weakening in the last few Stayed On Well. The favourites, Hunting Bag and Spearcourt, had every chance in the Waitemata Handicap, but they tired in the last furlong and both missed a place. Lionheart was responsible for most of the running, but he was headed soon after entering the straight by On Parade, who stayed on well to win nicely from Royal Appellant, who was always in the leading division. The first and second horses are halfbrothers and belong to the same family as King March. On Parade has been threatening to win for some time, and now that he has made a start he should soon score again. Maroha rawon strongly to get third after having none the best of the running and being a good way back at the half-mile. Royal Dash, fourth, Was closer at the finish than at any other stage and was followed by Hunting Bag, Air Lassie, Spearcourt 'and Lionheart. Won From Outside. Diatomous was favourite for the Electric Handicap, and duly won, although he drew the extreme outside, No. 10. Diatomous actually started from No. 8 owing to Golden Wings and Hunting Jay being hurdled off on the outside. These horses misbehaved at the barrier and were eventually left at the post, taking no part in the race. King Ford was in front for about a furlong, when he was headed by British Columbia, who was ridden out of the barrier with' the whip, and Diatomous. Once into the straight Diatomous took the measure of British Columbia and beat him very decisively. King Ford battled on to get third, and Rereatu, who came home fairly well on the outside, yas fourth, ahead of Gaysome, Cranford, and Variant. Cranford looked likely when well placed at the turn, but he weakened in the last furlong. Variant was never dangerous, and Wait and See was not prominent after being cut off early. Convincing Win. Cherry King, third fancy to Princess Doreen and Sea Fox, scored a very convincing win in the Plunket Handicap. Lady Spy made the running, Cherry King taking second place at the halfmile, and going to the front in the straight to win by over a length from Princess Doreen, who ran another good race. Lady Spy battled on for third, and King’s Archer was fourth, followed by Sea Fox and Lagoon. Cherry King was easing up in the last little bit, and is in fine form at present. An inquiry was held' into his reversal of form as compared with his running on the first day, but no action 'was taken. TOUT LE MONDE Justifies Party’s Faith NOTES AND COMMENTS New Year Attractions (By "The Watcher.”) The double success this week of Tout le Monde, commencing with the Manawatu Cup, would .be especially pleasing (o his owner, Ur. -M. G. luouisson, and his trainer, T. Lloyd, as they have stuck to him with infinite patience and faith, through all his disappointments., Dr. •Louisson could have got rid of Tout m Monde many times, and even on the day of the Manawatu Cup he received an inquiry from Invercargill, but he refused to sell. Tout le Monde showed great promise earlier in his career, but he has apparently needed tim to come right, and improved form during recent weeks has culminated in really good handicap class displays at Manawatu. Another- disappointing horse in the stable, Invoice, was also a winner at Manawatu, the first real form that he has shown this season. The success of this pair would also be consolation for the loss of the services of The Masquerader, who went sore after racing at Woodville. After Nineteen Years. Among the visitors to the Manawa-n meeting this week is the Melbourne trainer, and ex-New Zealander, Ron Cameron, who is renewing old acquaintances for the first time in nineteen years. Cameron served his time with Mr. J. Maher, father of the Awapuni trainer, Mrs. A. W. McDonald, aud was a wellknown figure in the saddle during bis residence in the Dominion. Interesting Betting. The Stratford betting innovation for the New Year meeting, where the totalisator will operate both straight-out and on the old 75-25 principle, is attracting a lot of attention in racing circles. Since the introduction of the win and place system, there has been a lot of opposition, so that Stratford is catering for both the straight-out devotee and the supporters of the old system. The Stratford fixture is one of the most popular of the New Year gatherings, - and there is every prospect of a good meeting next week, in all respects. Gets Them Home. Few riders can. show the winning percentage taht L. G. Morris establishes during the season. He has so far had three rides at the Manawatu meeting, and has won on each. Hard. One of our leading riders, who verbally contracted to come down from Auckland to the second day at Manawatu, later wired asking hi’s expenses. Needless t.o say, they were not forthcoming. It left rhe owner-trainer in a dilemma, and his feelings were not improved when, after sending a wire to Voitre at double rates, he shortly afterwards discovered that Voitre had received a month's suspension. Then, to cap all, he found that he had lost a five pound note out of his pocket. Marton’s Attractions. The Marton Jockey Club is making every endeavour to guarantee the success of its New Year meeting next week. It has a valuable drawing card in the presence of the Duke of Gloucester, and an added attraction will be the Duke's riding Black Man in the Ladies’ Bracelet, i): which also he is to be opposed by one of his own entourage. Duke’s Secretary to Ride. Racegoers at Marton on New Year’s Day, in addition to having the privilege of seeing the Duke of Gloucester riding in the Ladies’ Bracelet event, will also see his private secretary, Captain Curtis, in the saddle. Captain Curtis, who is a keen amateur rider, will have the mount on Tranquillity. Derby Prospect. The success of Legatee in the Great Northern Foal Stakes would be very pleasing to his breeder, Mr. G. JI. Currie, as lie is one of the first crop of foals sired by Posterity, a Son-in-Law horse, whose yearlings attracted a lot of attention at Trentham last January, He is a halfbrother to Al Jolson, Midinette and Variant, their dam. Motley, being by Absurd from Pennon, by Coriander from Eulogy. Legatee won a race at Wanganui in September and since then he has been placed several times. His third at .Trentham this month was a good effort, as he. was staying on, and he looks as if he would take a high place aitiong the two-year-olds now that the journeys are becoming longer, while he may be a good Derby candidate next season. Veteran Parades. During an interval in Wednesday’s programme at Hokitika, Mr. William Smith, aged 86, mounted on Shining Star, paraded before the public and went out on to the course with .tho intention of cantering a circuit of the course. His mount, however, showed a disinclination to go on with his taisk, and- Mr. Smith was persuaded to give up his attempt. He had the distinction of winning a race on the Hokitika beach in 1866, and on Wednesday carried similar colours to those h? wore on that occasion. Two Auckland Cup Winners. Chief Ruler, who died a few mouths ago. had a great record as a sire. He headed the winning lity in two seasons and for a number of years he held a leading position. lie was noted principally for the brilliant speed of his progeny, though he had some winners over middle distances. He has had two handicap winners at two miles, each of them in the Auckland Cup—Admiral Drake and Gold Trail. In the Case of Admiral Drake the Auckland success followed a second in the New Zealand Cup, in which event Gold Trail also ran second last month. Gold Trail. Tho Auckland Cup winner, Gold Trail, was bred by Mr. T. 11. Lowry and she was purchased as a yearling for 150gns. by Mr. D. M. Douglas, in whose colours she has done all her racing. At two years she started off with ‘three unplaced efforts, but she was in the money after that six times, including three wins. Her fqur suceteses at three years included the Great Northern Guineas and the Clifford Plate. Last season she had only one success. but she did very little racing, having to be spelled after Boxing Day, to get rid of a dry cough, which had troubled her for some time. Since she resumed racing thi« season she has been very, consistent. She won at Napier Park in September, also tho Pearce Handicap at Trentham. while she was placed several times, including seebnd in the New Zealand Cup and third in the Metropolitan Handicap. The Auckland Cup. however, is'easily her best and it must have been pleasing to her admirers, including her trainer, J. M. Cameron, ns they have never censed to argue that she was a good stayer. Her sire, Chief Ruler, earned his stud reputation over short courses, but it is probable Gold Trail got her stamina from her dam. Pure Gold, by Psychology from Desert Gold, by All Black from Auraritw, by Maltster from Aurons, by Wallace from Aura, dam of the Melbourne Cup winner, Aurarin. IMPROPER PRACTICES Trainer, Jockey and Horse Disqualified By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received December 28, 10.55 p.m.) Sydney, December 28. Twejve months’ disqualification was imposed to-day by the Australian Jockey Club stewards on the trainer, W. Botirke; the jockey, Keith Cook; and the gelding, Cherbourg. It was alleged that Bourke and Keith were guilty of improper practices at Kensington races yesterday in not allowing •Cherbourg to do his best.
The most outstanding feature of the athletic meeting conducted by the Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club for the Diamond Jubilee Committee at McLean Park last night, was the pole vault, in which event R. Callinan, by clearing 10 feet 10 inches, broke the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay record of 10 feet 6 inches, which he previously held, by four inches. There was an exceptionally large attendance of spectators, who witnessed many fine finishes, especially in the cycling events, in which Gyles ,of Christchurch, the holder of the national mile cycling title, competed.
