Cleaning City Streets
Sir, —My movements on Christmas Day brought me to Courtenay Place at 9.30 a.m. I was astounded at the filthy condition of the streets and footpath. ltwas indeed a case of the morning after the night before, and reflected no credit on those whose duty it is to keep our streets clean. More than one shop had deposited its Christmas Eve garbage on the road. I presume that it was cleaned up later in the day, but surely for a city like Wellington an earlier move might have been made. Willis Street was in a little better condition.
Years ago in Auckland they washed the streets by means of a hydrant. In this way rapid progress can be made. With our sealed streets some such method might be desirable to prevent a condition that was inclined to put one off one’s Christmas dinner.—l am, etc., W.B.S. 'Wellington, December 26.
