BRIGADE KEPT BUSY
<» Grass Fires in Hutt Valley The Lower Hutt Fire Brigade, like that of Wellington, has been busily engaged during the past week or so attending to grass fires, which have been far more numerous than last year. Last Sunday night (lie men fought a tire, which threatened property at Wyndrum Avenue, for two hours, that being the most serious outbreak of the series Two occurred on Monday, at Wakefield Street and Stellin Street, while on Tuesday and Wednesday outbreaks were subdued at Wakefield Street and at Strand Park respectively. Calls were received from Belmont and the Hutt Golf Links on Thursday. The amount of work involved can be appreciated from the fact tliaf only two men are engaged at the station. The Hutt River Board property, between Mahey Rd. gind Tennyson Avenue, suffered fairly extensive damage on Thursday, all the pine plantation being wiped out. Eight employees of the board worked on the tire strenuously, and just managed to save the hay-stack which was cut only this month. It was reported by the secretary of the board, Mr. A. J. Gearing, that the trouble might have been caused by bathers in the river, some of whom make a practice of lighting fires along the bank.
Eastbourne has been singularly fortunate. for no tires have occurred there.
At Petone there has been nothing of any consequence. At Silverstream on Thursday, tires broke out in several places along the side of the road, but no damage to property resulted.
