BACK TO NORMAL
City After Christmas Holidays
SHOPS SHUT LAST NIGHT Wellington city presented very much of a normal appearance again yesterday after the Christmas holidays. The shops opened on Thursday after being closed for two days, and numbers of offices have opened again also. Most of the Government offices opened yesterday with skeleton staffs. Many of the shops and buildings have taken, down their decorations which served the double purpose of welcoming the Duke of Gloucester to the city and marking Christmas festivities. ' Some remain, however, and probably will not now be dismantled till after New Year. ' Tlie street life of the city at night continues to display an added gaiety because of the coloured light decorations erected on the Royal routes during the stay of the Duke. The weather yesterday continued fine, although cloudy and sultry. The maximum temperature for the day was 77.2 degrees, but it went down to 66.0 degrees in tlie afternoon after the wind had gone round to the south. Shops in the city did not observe a late night last night, as they were open late earlier in the week on Christmas Eve. With the possible exception of some grocers’, shops, a late night will not be observed on New Year’s Eve, as the shops are going back to their normal late night, Friday. Shopkeepers are entitled to only one late night a week.
