SUFFERED FROM WOUNDS
RETURNED SOLDIER’S SUICIDE. Dominion Special Service. Masterton, March 1. Evidence that deceased had suffered from war wounds and had often expressed the wish that he were , dead, was given by Violet Dent, wife of Jack Dent, aged 46, a returned soldier, an inquest on whose death was held this morning before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M. Deceased was found on Tuesday' morning banging by’ his neck from a rope attached to a tree near the Masterton showgrounds. Lars Kjar, boardinghouse proprietor, deposed that deceased had slept at his place for two or three nights up to February 27, but had no meals there. At 9 o’clock on Monday _e.ning deceased told witness he would not be back. Violet Dent, wife of deceased, resident in Wellington, stated that on Frulay morning last deceased went ostensibly to a job at Ngahauranga. She later received a letter from him stating that he was going to wander. He wrote her again from Upper Hutt and from Masterton. He had been out of work off and on for two years and had seemed to worrv on this account. He bad suffered from war wounds and often said he wished he were dead. The Coroner returned a verdict of suicide.
