SPORTS BY ELECTRIC LIGHT RETURN VISIT OF AUSTRALIANS With J. Standen and D. Gray, the two New South Wales cyclist representatives at the next Olympic Games, as the principal attraction, the electric light sports meeting held at the Basin Reserve on Wednesday night under the auspices of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association, attracted a crowd of over 3000. Another lOsec. run was made by C. H. Jenkins when he won the heat in the 100 yards handicap from scratch. There was an exciting finish in the 440 yards scratch race, J. T. Fleming heading off L. C. Veitch at the tape. C. B. Allen, who finished third, ran wide, and covered much more ground than the leaders. In the 440 yards cycle scratch race, 11. Scarfe headed J. Standen (New South Wales) by a length in his heat the first man only qualifying for the linal. D. Gray (New South Wales) won his heat comfortably, and gained a flying start In the linal, holding his advantage to the end. In the heats, L. Bird and It. James, and in the final 11. Scarfe fell. The mile scratch invitation race was another win for New South Wales, J. Standen beating D. Gray by a length. The opening laps saw Flett, Horsfall, and Carswell leading, with Standen well up, but the final quarter opened with the two Australians ahead, and they stayed there. Tim time was the good one for the damp track, 2min. 30 3-osec. In the Wellington pair for the pursuit race, C, Flett replaced T. Oakley, who had injured an ankle. In the first mile Standen and Gray gained 15 yards, and the second mile saw this gain increased to about 100 yards. Standen and Gray won by 110 yards.
