DANNEVIRKE MEETING CAPITULATION WINS MEMORIAL SPRINT TO MISS PAT Dominion Special Service. Dannevirke, March 1. The Dannevirke meeting concluded toCapitulation won the Hartgill Memorial to-day from Tintoretto, and th° principal sprint event fell to, Miss Pat, who scored very decisively. 'The weather was delightful and the course m splendid order. 11. Wiggins continued Ins success in the saddle, and during the two days he rode six winners and one second.- The totalisator handled 4:10,387, against 4211,044, for the same day last year, tho total for the meeting being 4121,862, against 4126,065 for last year, a decrease of 412203. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Panorama was a good favourite for the High-weight Handicap. Revel and Ponjoia led till nearing tho straight, which Panorama and Revel entered together, Panorama rather wide out. Braeman finished well under the whip and got up to win on tho post from Panorama, with Revel three lengths back. NOVICE STAKES. Backers suffered another reverse in tho Novice Stakes, for which War Wings was heavily backed. The favourite was in front from the rise of the barrier, and led into the straight, with Merry Mixture, but was in trouble a furlong from home, where Patearoa put in a claim and soon had the upper hand, eventually winning by a length. War Wings beat High Society half a length for second place. Agreeable and Purseful were left at the barrier. GLENGARRY HANDICAP. Several of the competitors in the Glengarry Handicap were comparatively well backed. Dobbin being tho actual favourite. Epistle dived through the tapes repeatedly, and eventually got away on terms with the field. She quickly got Io the front, and was with Miss Pat and Sarchee at the home turn, but from there Miss Pat left the field and came homo alone six lengths in front of Arrow Lad. Sarchee did not battle on, and was another four lengths away, while Dobbin was a poor fourth. TIRATU HACK HANDICAP. Tanagra and Silver Tray were the best backed in the Tiratu Hack Handicap, and Lady Cynthia and Tom Byrne were poorly backed. Tom Byrne, Silver Tray, and Little Queen were out in front, and in the straight Tom Byrne came away to win very easily by two lengths from Lady Cynthia, who beat her stable mate by a length. Silver Tray and Grey Mist, wore next. Marsurd bled a little before the race and was withdrawn. Tho 4191 invested on her was not refunded. HARTGILL MEMORIAL. The Woodville winner, Huikai, who had run third in the Dannevirke Cup, was favourite for the Harlgill Memorial Handicap, but was one of tho last to finish. Capitulation took charge when tho race was about half over, and led across tho top from Huikai, Cohesion, Kilmiss, Perle do Leon, De Luxe, and Tintoretto. Perle do Leon and Tintoretto improved their positions before reaching tho straight, and they gave most trouble to the winner, Capitulation. Tintoretto was out very wide at the home turn, and then ran Capitulation to half a length. Perle de Leon was only another length away. Kilmiss was fourth and Cohesion fifth. TELEPHONE HACK HANDICAP. For the Telephone Handicap, Hinckatorangi and Discourse were heavily backed favourites. Hinekatorangi rushed to the front from the start, and was joined four furlongs from home by Aurora Borealis, with Maui and Hypnotic together behind them. Discourse ran round the field at the turn, and looked like winning again, but Maui got through on the rails, and stayed on to win by three quarters of a length from the Foxton filly. Spearmiss was a couple of lengths away third, and Hypnotic fourth. KAITOKE HANDICAP. Big support was forthcoming for The Swell in the Kaitoke Handicap, and ho won handsomely from Cosmetic Kilmoyler and Lin Arlington led round the home turn from Cosmetic and The Swell, and The Swell came on to win by two lengths from Cosmetic, who was a length ahead of Lin Arlington, while BonIjonime, Capitulation, and Kilmoyler were next. The Swell got a beautiful run on the rails nearly mil the way. TAPE A TA HACK HANDICAP. Timi Inihi was a better favourite than Sandhurr or Gordon Swift for the Tapuata Hack Handicap, from which Braeman was withdrawn. Sandburr lay at the back of the field till tho straight was reached, but there he took charge, and was not seriously troubled to win by half a length from Gordon Swift,’’with Timi Inihi about the same disance away third. NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By
“Vigilant.”)
“Wager.”—Omited to state yesterday that Hie name of the race was the Kelburn Plate. Wild Pigeon did not win out of her turn yesterday when she led the field home in the Marlborough Cup. She showed at the midsummer, meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club that she was in good shape, but, unfortunately, her rider in that race lost an iron, aiid this prejudiced her chance. Wild Pigeon is engaged in tho New Zealand St. Leger at the coming Wellington meeting, and as slip shows pretensions to staying, her presence in the field will add interest to the race. The two-year-old form this season is rather complicated. In the spring, Childsplay stood out from, tho others, and it appeared that it would take something out of the ordinary to beat her, but she developed leg trouble which dimmed her brilliancy. The meeting ot Childsplav and Staghunter’in the Foal Stakes at Auckland, where Staghunter won easily, made the latter look the best two-year-old of the season, but he did not keep his position long, for, in the next start tho Australian-bred youngster, Prince Humphrey, showed his superiority. The latter, who is a strong finisher, has the best credentials at present for Derby honours. Tresham finished very strongly in the Makirikiri Handicap on the first day at Dannevirke, and r. handicap in better company should not be beyond him. T. Quinlivan led in two winners on the first dav at Dannevirke. Dark Girl (Absurd—Hino Pango) won the Maiden and Tresham the Makirikiri Handicap. At Riccarton the other morning Money Order galloped four furlongs in 49 4-5 sec., but this was beaten later by Amourette, who registered 49 l-ssec. Riccarton stables usually contribute liberally to ilie nominations for meet-, ings at’Trentham, and at the approaching autumn meeting they are represented by Rapier, Lancer, Monev Order, Satrap, Amor. The Viscount, Corsetiere, Amourette, Don Jose, Fair Exchange, Crossbow, Silver Coot, Prickles, Quarterdeck. Sudden Storm. Wild “, or , ! s’ Swoopalong, Phillipic. Eulalie. Shal’' mar, Court Jester, Amorist, Scoff, Great Star, Singlespear, and Nincompoop. Eulalie. who has been nominated for the 'Wellington meeting, galloped a mile the other morning in Imin. 45 3-ssec — a good effort. Goblin Market has been allowed to drop out of the North Island Challenge Stakes, but the stable is still represented by Eulalie and Shalimar. The New Zealand-bred but Australian performed Singlespear, whom R. V>. King recently brought back from byitney, Ims been galloping fast on the Riccarton tracks in recent try-outs. Benzora is said to have thrown off the soreness which recently troubled him, and is working along nicely. He is engaged at Opanake. Olympic has now been in work for some time, and fie has been nominated for the hurdle race at Opunake. He has shown that he knows how to jump, and is to be a runner at Opunake. Barryanda was unlucky at Wanganui, otherwise she might have won a race. She figures in both seven-furlong hack events at Opunake. Service ran well in the Maiden Plate at Wanganui. She also is engaged at Opunake. Eka ran a good race on the second dav at; Wanganui, carrying 7lb_. overweight. The Acre mare is engaged at Opunake. Ballymoy IT dwelt slightly when the barrier was sent up in ti;c open sprint at. Te Arolia last. Saturday. Nevertheless she was soon in a good position, and before (he field had gone tar she was out. in front. Ballymoy II was lying behind the favourite into the straight, and then failed to see it out. Probably she had lost, some of her finishing effort, in the early rush to make up lost ground. True Blood, who lias done very liHle racing since he returned from Australia, figures among the list of entries for the Franklin Cup. The Archery gelding will be racing- on bis honie track which should be something in his favour. Davlight ran a surprisingly good race in the Waihou Handicap at Te Arolia, which was his onlv start at the meeting. The race should improve him. tor he'has onlv been up n short time, while he gives promise of returning to ms best foim again. The Te Aroha-trained juveniler Lucy Rose is beginning to display better form, and her turn for a win may not be far awav (says a northern writer). She is owned and trained by G. Tleid, and is by Lucullus from Autumn Rose. Valkyrita, the two-year-old sister to Valkon. was among the runners i>i two-vear-old races at Te Arolia. She failed to get into the money,, but nevertheless has” some pace, and with a little more racing should do better. Good reports bad been circulated as to the speed possessed by Partial Feiipse, the three-vear-old half-sister by Nassau to the speedy Awarere, winner of the Railway Handicap a couple of months a»o. On Satnrdiy at Te Arolia the filly was badly loft.’ nnd even then she co through a big field to finish just behind tho placed division. Micrometer covered a lot of ground in the Champion Hack Cun nt Te Aroha on Mondav. and only for that would piobably have wen. as she was very close up third at the iinisti. There is in F. T.oomb’s stable at Te Awamntn a distinctly promising sort in the chestnut Cvbelle. a daughter of Cynic and The Hook, Cybelle scored in the maiden at Te Aroha on last Saturday, giving a fine display, and althoi iry li she failed in hack company on . Monday «l>e should be prominent again «-oon. The correct card showed her as a tliree-vear-old, but Ihe Stud Hook places her as a year older than that. Appellant put up a good performance when he won the Shaftesbury Handicap at Te Aroha. He started from the extreme outside in a field of. 21. hut was soon in front on the rails inswlo of two furlongs, and the Westcourt gelding staved the six furlongs nut in determined fashion to get the verdict by two lengths. The following comment by the veteran American racing man and breeding authority, Mr. C. E. Brossman. will be appreciated by people who do not regard their own views on thoroughbred racing too seriously: “Whenever a man claims that be can take so much of this blood and so much of that, with a certain colour here and certain colour there, and make a champion racehorse—he is talking through his hat. The only accurate lest is the race track test, where tho Wood lines of the winner always become fashionable. They run in all sizes and colours.”
RICCARTON TRACK NOTES Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 28. Weather conditions were ideal for training operations at Riccarton this merninv, and practically all the nurses engaged at Saturday’s meeting at Motukaraka were given winding-up gallops. The outside of the course proper was again available, and this provided splendid going. , Philippic apeared to have the upperhand of Shalimar throughout a nine-iur-long gallop, and finished in front in the good time of Imin. ;>8 3-usec. Uns was Philippic’s first effort, over a distance, and he accomplished his task in pleasing style. Footfall was restricted to a serviceable seven-furlong gallop, pulling up "dl- . , Moorland and Battle Colours were associated in a six-furlong gallop, occupying Imin. Itlsec. The former is very well at present, and is to contest the Kinloch Handicap to-morrow. Kapier held Lancer safe at the conclusion of a mile gallop, the last seven furlongs taking Imin. 31 3-s s ec. Eulalie gave a pleasing display ny comfortably traversing a mile in Imm. 45 2-sscc. . , , . Synonym showed slightly m front of Stormy, after covering five furlongs in Imin. 3 3-ssec. , Fair Exchange’s time for five fill longs was imin. 3 2-ssec.. and Singlespear galloped the same distance in imin. 3 3-ssec. Satrap, joined by Amor at the six-fur-lon<- post, finished three lengths in front nt the eml of a mile journey traversed in Imin. 45-sec., the last tour furlongk taking 54- 2-ssec. Nincompoop outclassed Grcyfinch ovei five furlongs, and finished some distance in front of her in the good time of Imin. 2 2*sscc. “ Dominant and Honeycomb were abreast after galloping six furlongs in liinn. 17sec„ a performance that was equalled by Polydecfes ano No Response. Qphir was responsible for his best effort for some time by reeling off a mile in -min. 43 3-ssec., the last seven furlongs in imin. 3(1 4-ssec. He was assisted over the early part by Thurso and accompanied home by Rascal., tins was the fastest gallop o«* the distance during the morning’s work. Moratorium finished in front of Malmsey and The Harp, after covering five furlongs in Imin. 3 2-ssec. , Don Jose qnd Crossbow galloped six furlongs together in Imin. 16 3-ssec. jfagna Charta created a favourable impression by getting to the end, of a mile journey in Imin. 45 3-ssec., without being ridden out. He is to contest the Peninsula Cup on Saturday. Countersign and Rotor registered 49 l-ssec. for four furlongs, and Scoff and Money Order separately sprinted the same distance in Msec. Sea Gay had a slight advantage from King’s Jester and 'Weather Raiu at the conclusion of four furlongs covered in Msec. Great Star’s time over the same ground was 50 4-ssec. Royal Land (E. Shaw) gave a pleasing exhibition of schooling over two fences. Thorndale was despatched from the seven furlong post, and was joined bv Some Abbey at six furlongs. He crossed the line in front of his stablemate, the time recorded being . Imin. 32 2-ssec. Thorndale will be ridden in the Peninsula Cup by A. E. Ellis. Spoils and Court Jester were abreast throughout a five furlong gallop, occupyin” Imin. 4 1-ssec. F. D. Jones left for Wellington to-night with Limerick and Zaragoza, to connect with the Mannganni. leaving for Sydney to-rnorruw. The following programme for the trip hns been mapped out for Limerick: March 24, Rawson Stakes at Rosehill: March 31. Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm; April 7. Autumn Stakes at Randwick; Anvil 11. either All Aged Stakes or Cnmherlanrl Stakes at Randwick; April 14. King’s Cun at Randwick. Limerick will be ridden ui his engagements by M. MeCarton. The return journey will be made to New Zealand by the first available boat after April 14.
ELLERSLIE TRACK NOTES Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 1. F. Gilchrist has recommissioned the two-year-old fillv, June Wine, by Jloclielaga—Lorita Howard. She has grown since last being handled, and may not show any form until next season. The track at (Jllerslie this morning was considerably livelier than it has been for some time. The course proper, with the trestles well in, and No. 3 grass, were both used lor fast work. Bombardcr, who is in good shape, pleased more than I’almares over five lurlongs from the now post in Imin. 3 2-ssec—a good gallop. Corinax was far too good for Archibald over six furlongs in Imin. 19 2-5 tec. The Magpie gelding is very fit, and will be one of the fancies if started at Franklin next week. Justify and the Swift Flight—Kakama filly recorded useful sprints. They are not quite ready, but both are coming on. The Thorn, who does not look as well as formerly, sprinted half a mile in 52 4-ssec. Sir Archie, who is in some favour for the Franklin Cup. was timed from the seven-furlong barrier in Imin. SI 4-ssec., a useful effort, as he finished rather well. Storm Field, who is still a maiden, ran away from Bettv Zane over five furlongs from the new post in Imin. 5 2-ssec.. a nice gallop for one of his class. He is a nice-looking horse, who has only to reproduce track form to run well forward. Princess Ronnie, carrying C. Brown, ran seven furlongs in attractive style in Imin. 30sec. She is coming on rapidly. but still looks a trifle burly. Archeno, who will relish the easing of
the tracks, was always a little better than Wee Marble over five furlongs from the old post in Imin. 7sec. Master Clements, not yet quite ready, easily beat Mountain Guide over three furlongs in 39sec. He will probably win a maiden after be has had a little ingLuxurious and Bluespear galloped, but they did not impress. The Mangere horse Harbour View went nicely over six furlongs in Imin. 19sec. He can handle soft going well, and should be worth watching during the autumn. Solanco and Vallar, two maidens in J. Williamson’s stable, easily beat Winsome Girl over half a mile in 50sec.— a good effort. Although both were ridden out, they are coming on, but will both be better for a race. All the above-mentioned gallops were recorded on the course proper, and the following on No. 3 grass. Salamander beat Modest Boy and Searamouche over six furlongs in Imin. 19sec., but Modest Boy was not asked for his best. Nuki Boy and Diamond Queen sprinted three furlongs in 39 l-ssec„ the latter pleasing more. Sir Henry and Tea Money went half a mile in 55 2-ssee. Neither is ready, and both were going comfortably. ■Winsome Boy, a lazy worker unless kicked out, recorded the same time for the same distance. Royal Trek, Cessian, and Sylvanun, all green ones, finished in the order named over three furlongs in 39sec. Bainagar took Imin. 5 4-ssee. for five furlongs, and Newberry, who is holding his condition up to date, went nicely over half a mile in 50 2-sscc. Prince Papa, a big gelding by Prince xMerriwee—Te Papapa, gave a very encouraging display over ponv hurdles, and White Light, another beginner, nlso performed rather well. Spnlmoor, who showed promise earlier in the season is not doing so well. He was inclined to chance his fences, and was nearly down at the third hurdle. The country performer. Peketahi. who is a fair type for high-weight handicaps. Bas joined J. Buchanan’s team at Ellerslie. S. Hodge has taken over Mr. T. Impey’s team, and they are now located at Avondale.
