Tho days of Makutu, or Maori magic, are apparently not over (remarks an exchange). When Te Akarana Maori Association some time ago decided to give Mount Ellen something of its original outlook by erecting a pa and planting trees, etc., inadvertently a Mangere chieftainess (Kahupake) was offended. A totara was planter!, and at the time Kahupake said she would bewitch the tree. Now she makes a Holder statement, and says her makutu is solely responsible for the Auckland district’s drought. However, the totara thrives, and tho drought will break in due course. Canada is well on the way to becoming the second gold-producing country of the world.
