DANNEVIRKE MEETING

KILMISS DEFEATS CUP FAVOURITE H. WIGGINS RIDES FOUR WINNERS Dominion Special Service. Dannevirke, February 29. Racing al. Dannevirke 10-tluy was held under ideal conditions. Kain had made the track perfect, and the weather was calin and cool. The attendance was moderate. The race for tho Cup it it” ncssed the downfall of a. warm hivourite. Oratrix, who failed by a head. Kiiiniss, the winner, returnee! the best divi(lend of the day. 11. Wiggins had a great time in lhe saddle, riding tour winners. The iota lisa tor handled £ll,* •175. against .£13,021 on Ihe corresponding day last jear, DIG H-WEIGHT HAN DI GAP. Lady Gay was a slightly better favourite than Bed Fuchsia tor the HighWcigfiK Handicap, but she ran only moderately. Merry Singer led to the straight from Bed Fuchsia and Braeman. Braeman stuck ou well, under pressure, but Bed Fuchsia hold him safe and won nicely bv half a length. Lady Gay was two lengths and a half away third, and .Merry Singer was fourth. MAIDEN PLATE. Geslo carried nearly half the belling on the Maiden Plate, but he was beaten by another Hauke’s Bay runner. Dark Giri. Gosto moved away well, but crossing the top Ahalama was in front, with Lady Moon and Gesto next, with Dark Girl and War Wings handy. Ahalama led into the straight from Lady Moon and Gesto, but Dark Girl took charge a furlong from home, and beat Gesto by half "a length, with Ahalama a length and a half away third, and Lady Moon and High Society next, Pursefull did not g’> away with the field, and War Wings got on the heels of Gesto at the entrance to the straight, stumbled, and lost his rider. Gesto should do better shortly. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Dobbin began well in the President s Handicap, and led into the straight from Arrow Lad and Miss Pat, eventually slaying on well enough to win by half a length from Miss Pat, with Arrow Lad three lengths away third., and Coot ami Epistle next. Dobbin won nicely, but Miss Pat was unlucky, as she received an interrupted passage. Cosmetic was poorly placed all lhe way, and never looked likely to win. Arrow Lad ran a fair race, but bis 8.13 was a little too much for him in the finish.

TAHOBAITE HANDICAP. Discourse registered a very creditable performance in. winning, the lahoraite Hack Handicap, for which she was a short-nriced favourite. She tailed (be field to the straight, a nd was carried out verv wide when turning for home, but under pressure got up and won bv a length from Hmekatorangi, who had been in front most of iho journey. Hypnotic was a neck behind the second horse, and Little Queen and Maui followed.

DANNEVIRKE CUP. Oratrix was a rather unlucky nmre, otherwise she might have won the Dannevirke Cup, for which she iL favourite, much more heavily backed than Novar or Cohesion, who were most fancied of the other runners. As the field ran through the straight Wilderness was in charge from Huikai. Oratrix. Kilmiss, Cohesion mid Novar. There was no important change along the back, but at the half-mile Huikai led from Cohesion Oratrix, Kilnnss and Novar. Oratrix took charge soon after turning for homo and looked like scoring a comfortable victory, but Kilmiss came with *t fast late run nnd won on the post by a head. Huikai, a couple of lengths away, was third, and Cohesion. Tintoretti and Novar next. - Apparently Kilmiss was not noticed finishing on the outside until it was too late. . ~ . Wilderness bled during the race. Oratrix will not run to-morrow, but will race at Napier.

ORING I HACK HANDICAP. Lady Cynthia wound up favourite for the Oringi Hack Handicap, in which Silver Tray, Moa Bird and Ramesis also were fairly well supported.. Toni Byrne and Silver Tray were prominent in the straight, but a furlong and a halt from home Moa Bird was brought along, andshe soon gathered the field ami i' o n nicely by a length and a half from Silver Tray, who had three lengths to spare from Lady Cynthia, with Giey Mist and Tom Byrne next. Tom Byrne failed to stay, and Ladv Cvnthia ran below her best. Moa Bird paid a handsome price and might be heard of again.

RAKAIATAT HANDICAP. One of the best races of the nay was the Rakaiatai Handicap. Lhe Swell was favourite, and the only others solidly backed were Tresham and Henna. Willow Wai carried the field along a while, with The Swell in the middle of the field and Tresham well back. Tresham moved up shortly approaching tile straight, but halfway down the running it looked as if he would be pocketed. ° However, he got up on the rails near the finish and won by a head from The Swell. Bonliomme was close up third and Our Jack, Othon and Henna were next.

MAKIRIKIRI HANDICAP. Onlv four contested the Makirikiri Handicap, and Panorama was favourite, but there was surprising backing for Grand National, who was very sore. Sometime made the running to the straight from Gordon Swift and 1 anorama, with Grand National tailed qt). Panorama came on to win very easily by three lengths from Gordon Switt, who was ten lengths ahead of Sometime. DETAILS OF THE RACING BY TELEGRAPIL—PBESS ASSOCIATION. Dannevirke. February 29.
