PAVING AT TAITA

WIDENING TO COME FIRST. The City and Suburban. Highways Board yesterday received tile decision of the Main Highways Board in regard to proposals recently made by Mr. D. R. Hoggard (representing Hutt County Council) concerning paving work at Taita and beyond the overhead railwav bridge at Silverstreani. The proposals were:—(l) That the City and Suburban Highways Board take over a further length o'f about a mile north of the Taita “Church and construct an asphaltic concrete pavement on that length during the current paving season'; (2) that the board should immediately put in hand the sealing of a length of road already taken over by the’board and being maintained by the board north of the railway overbridge at Silverstreani. With regard to proposal (I) the district engineer stated that the Main Highways Board had ruled that the existing road be widened to a minimum of 25ft. and thoroughly consolidated The Main Highways Board would subsidise the widening work £ for £, and when completed the board would take over the road. It could then be paved forthwith. In regard to No. 2 the district engineer said that the Main Highways Board would approve of the sealing of the existing gravel length north of the railway bridge on a subsidy of 80s. for £l, aiid that proposals should be submitted for approval. He pointed ’ out also that the existing road was not on the legal road reserve. This was a matter which should be attended to before anv sealing was done. In conclusion, the district engineer urged that every effort should be made to settle the matter in order that the surface sealing mijjlit be done in the present season. , , The engineer is to report further upon a portion of the work winch members of the board thought could be proceeded with without undue delay.
