Appearances a month ago suggested that barley would not yield anything like so well as last year, when the returns were easily the highest ever recorded in the district (states the Christchurch “Press”). Since then a good many crops of barlev have gone through the threshing milts, and there are grounds for stilting that the earlier estimates were decidedly on the low side. Many fields of barlev have thresh ed a long wav above the estimates formed even by growers Tn some cases, estimates have been exceeded by from 10 to 15 bushels, and in one or- two instances, 20 bushels to the acre. The grain this '-ear is consider ably heavier than usual As a general rule, a sack of standard size holds an even (our bushels of barlev, but this season the bagmen have to turn down front four to six inches more of the top of the sack than usual. The liarlev experts are well satisfied with the quality of the grain that has come tin der their notice so far.
