Wellington Regatta. The Wellington regatta, which was held last Saturday, proved a great success, both financially and from a point of view of rowing. The Regatta Club are to be congratulated upon the efforts to make it so. Crews from Canterbury, Wanganui, Marlborough, Auckland, Nelson, and Wellington competed, and the public were given an opportunity of seeing the nominees for the Olympic Eight in action. Tho most successful clubs were as follows (allowing three points for first, two for second, and one for third place):—Star Boating Club, 17; Wairau, 9: Avon. 8; Canterbury, 6; Petone and Union (Wanganui). 5 each; Union (Christchurch), 4; 'Wellington. 3; Blenheim. Tauranga. and Wanganui. 2 each. The financial success of the regatta will permit the Regatta Club to run another rccatta with the provincial eights on 'March 24. There will probably bo races for junior, maiden, youths’, ami light-weight maiden fours. 'Varsity Eight. There is now a rowing club formed nt Victoria University, the members, of which are endeavouring io get an eight race with Auckland University. This race will bo rowed, if possible, about April 7. There are quite enough men to pick from at Victoria University. Among these are Gray, Crease, Mullins (of hist year’s crew). Thomas, Taylor, Bell, Brooker, and Rees, all of whom nre in successful Star Boating Club regatta crews. Star Club Notes. The final of the Junior Sculls has been rowed, the results being as follow-.—First heat: Hinkley beat Hunter, and McLean beat. Osborne. Semi-final: Hinkley beat McLean, and Lambert bent Taylor. In the final Hinkley beat Lambert by two lengths. Senior Sculls.—Gray beat Newton, Williams beat Thomas, Comerford beat Herd, and Leask beat Rees in the first heat,
while Gray beat Williams and Comerford beat: Leask in tho second heat. Gray and Comerford havo yet to row off for the final. Comerford won the race last season, with Gray as runner-up. The ladies’ fours was rowed on February 17 and resulted as follow: —In the first heat, Newton’s crew beat Comerford’s crew, and Cooke’s beat Moffatt’s. In the semi-final McLean Il’s crew beat Newton’s, and in the final McLean’s crow beat Cooke’s crew. The winning crew consisted of McLean II (str.), Taylor I (3), Lutz (2), Whiteford (bow). The following men have been selected to represent the club in the championshiji regatta which is to be held at
Wanganui next Saturday, March 3:— Senior Pair: G. Williams (str.), G. C. Cooke (bow). Senior Double Sculls: G. C. Cooke (str.), G. Williams (bow). Junior Fours: D. G. Gray (str.), K. F. Crease (3), F. H. Mullins (2), D. Brooker (bow). Maiden Fours: G. Thomas (str.), A. Taylor (3). I. McHardy (2), P. H. Field (bow). Maiden Double Sculls: G. Thomas (str.), P. 11. Field <bow(. Youths’ Fours: R. A. Comerford (str.), It. F. McLean (3), F. M. Bell (2), S.G. Rees (bow). The above crews from the junior four downwards have all won regatta races this season. Cooke and Williams do not seem to be comfortable in the pair yet. They are going up to Wanganui several days before the regatta, and should improve there.
