WHAKAREWAREWA VILLAGE

AN IMPROVEMENT SCHEME To commence preliminary investigations in connection with an improt ement scheme for the Maori village of Whakarewarewa, the Director of town Planning (Mr. R. B. Hammond) and the Assistant Engineer-iu-Chief the Public Works Department (Mr. C. J. McKenzie) left by the Limited express last night for Rotorua. This step follows on the recommendations of the Commission, which, in 1926, inquired into and reported upon the advisability or necessity of establishing model villages on the sites o the present villages of Ohineniutu and Whakarewarewa. . , . . The object of the officials visit is to determine, before any expenditure is undertaken, the best means of developing a certain portion of Whakarewarewa, as all that is contemplated at the moment is the extension of that village.
