MANAWATU RIVER VERY LOW
EFFECT OF DRY SPELL Palmerston North, February 27. At to-dav’s meeting of the Palmerston North River Board, the engineer, Mr. E. Fisher, stated that, at the time of reporting, the river had receded to a level of 12ft. below the ordinary summer level, which was 34 inches lower than the level recorded a month ago. During the rain experienced on February .12, a rise of 74 inches had been recorded, and considering this addition,.the fall of 34 inches over a month was significant. Regarding the new willow plantations in respect to those on the higher level of the river bank, these were adversely affected bv the protracted spell of drv weather that up to a few days ago had been experienced in the Manawatu, and a certain loss was inevitable. The report was adopted.
