BAPTIST JUBILEE

MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS. ATTEND. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) and several members of the City Council with their wives attended, by invitation, the jubilee anniversary service at the Baptist Church, Vivian Street, on Sunday morning, when the sermon was preached by the Rev. J. K. Archer (Mayor of Christchurch). In the course of his remarks Mr. Archer said that -while the Church had rendered good service during the- fifty years, it had not, so far as he was aware, produced a man for the office of Mayor, with the exception of Mr. T. Cathie, v.bo was Mayor of Karori. lie expressed the hope that the church would one day achieve that distinction, and not only that, but that ho would be a Labour Mayor Perhaps, added Mr. Archer, lie should not make such remarks as those when the sitting Mayor was not in a position Vmcmber of the City Council who was present at the service said he considered Mr. Archer’s remarks very much out of place on such an occasion, and it seemed as if bo could not resist the opportunity of doing a little Labour propaganda. Amongst those present were Councillors .1 Burns. F. Meadoweroft. J. Aston. R. W. MoVilly, and W. J. Gaudm.
