MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POLICE CASES Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., presided in iho Magistrate’s Court yesterday. A remand until March 5 for medical treatment was granted in the case ol James Donalen, aged 51, who was charged with having been found in a slate ol' helpless drunkenness. George James Cullen, aged 28, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour on a chaigo of stealing a quantity of tobacco and cigarettes at Blenheim, valued in all at <1:15, the property of Ernest Allred Priddle. The term was made concurrent with a sentence of two years accused is at present serving on several charges of issuing valueless cheques. A sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Samuel Stevens White, alias Robertson, alias Stevens, aged 24 who was charged with stealing «£3 in money, the property of M. Leslie John Lee. Helena Ivy O’Hanlan. who admitted stealing a coat, valued at AHO, the property of Emily McCorkell, was placed on probation for twelve months, and ordered to make restitution. Accused, who committed the theft in October, 1920, was seel wearing the coat in the street by tlie caretaker of a dance hall, from where it was stolen. When interviewed bv the police, the girl denied all knowledge of the affair, but a few days ago, when taxed again as the result of information received, she admitted having stolen the coat. When the detectives visited her home they found that O’Uanlan bad burned the garment. An application for the suppression of the name was refused.
