Fired with the desire to emulate harbour swimmers, a schoolboy set out the other day on an attempt to swim from Northcote to Bayswater, across the bay (says the Auckland “Star”). He started with a free over-arm stroke, and was making good time, with a promise of completing the journey without distress, when he made a fatal glance to the rear. A shark was cruising along leisurely in the calm blue-green water, evidently following the same course as himself. The first inspiration was to abandon the swim, the second to get out of the water at the earliest opportunity. With a turn of speed that would have done him credit in a college championship, he made by the shortest line for the dinghy that was following.
