It is obvious (hat farmers in Otago have learnt the lesson that it pays to pickle seed wheat before sowing (comments llio "Otago Daily Tinies"). This is borne out by the absence of the usual heavy pet'ccntiige of slinking smut to be found in wheat crops. Last year this disease was particularly prevalent in a great many purls of South Otago, and conside: able loss resulted. in most crops Ibis season the disease is either entirely absent or present in very small degree. This ran be assigned to the unremit ling work carried out by the fields division of lhe Department of .Agriculture by means ol' lord lire, demonstration, and personal advice.
