WELLINGTON NOMINATIONS
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By
"Vigilant.”)
There is no donbi that form is most reliable at this period of the year, for at Woodville on Sahirday five first favourites prevailed, in addition to one second favourite.
Cosmetic ran quite a good race on the opening day at. Woodville, and followed it up by winning the Maharahara Handicap on the concluding day. Although the field she boat, was not strong she won easily, anil she has possibilities for events in the future.
Epistle up till just lately has been a fairly good sprinter, but by finishing third in a mile and a distance race at Woodville on Salurday io lluikai ami Capitulation she has pretensions io run out a middle distance event.
Although Aston had a poor field to beat; at, Woodville on Saturday it was a good performance, as he won in a canter. Jle has distinct possibilities for much belter company.
I’egawny, who started favourite in the Ilerries Memorial Cup at Te Arolia on Saturday, ran quite a good race, although beaten out of a place at the finish. He lias had very little racing recently, so it is quite possible that the outing will benefit him. When in form ho is a good handicap horse up to a. mile anil a quarter, with prospects of annexing a win. in any company.
I’aganelli, despite reports that he was a non-starter at Te Arolia on Saturday, made his appearance and eventually won.
Rapier’s name is missing from the acceptors in the Peninsula Cup, his connections evidently not liking the idea of him carrying such a heavy impost. While being indulged in half-pace work on the track at Washdyke, Arpent broke a leg and had to bo destroyed. Bright Glow, so far, is not a gooct traveller, and on being taken to race meetings has a tendency to “get on her toes.’’ In order to educate her, J. Fryer took her along with Blue Peter on his trip to Woodville last Thursday, says a northern writer.
Scoff sprang a. tendon during the running of the Trial Stakes at Rieearton on Saturday last, and this probably tended towards his poor finishing effort. Ho has been an absentee from the tracks since, and will not be raced at the Banks Peninsula meeting.
On Thursday O. Cox brought up from Kai-iwi Mr. G. F. Moore’s filly by Chief Ruler—Valerie. The youngster is being taken in hand early.
Mr. J. ©'Driscoll's hurdler Tawehi broke down badly and has had to bo destroyed. Tawehi was a very wellbred horse, being by Kilb'roney— Taringaniutu, but although fairly successful, did not quite fulfil expectations. He won about AtiOO in stakes for Mr. O’Driscoll.
The Wingatui mentor. F. Shaw, says that his gift two-year-old, Radiant Knight, b.v Paladin—Rainbow Gold. byAbsurd —Commerce. by San Francisco— Safeguard, by Maxim (son of Musket)— Teredo, by Apromont—Nautilus, by Traducer —Waterwitch, is sound and progressing the right way. Prior to somersaulting on a bilumen road in the spring Radiant Knight was classed as the equal of his stablematc. Chide, hence there is every chance that ho will furnish into a useful performer.
Maunga, says an exchange, is now bowling along in solid work al Hastings. Those who saw this gelding race last season will see a totally different .Maunga this year. Not often a horse at nine years of ago furnishes from a lean to 'robust horse, but this is what Miss Douglas' gelding has done, and which .may be accounted for by his being put to steeplocbasdng last season. At the present limo Maunga promises to develop ’into one of the best ’chasers the district has turned out. which, remembering the giants of the past, is saying a big thing. Autobiography, a cast-off from Mr. Cr. D. Greenwood’s stable, won a race recently at a West Australian Turf Club's meeting at Perth.
Young Pretender, flic four-vear-oTd descendant of Some Boy 11 —Rosetta, who was an inmate of J. F. Tutclien’s team at Te liupa, died last Thursday.
Loyal Irish must; bo (lie champion of Samoa, for at. the Apia Turf Club’s meeting, lie won tlic Christmas Handicap and the President’s Handicap, carrying 12.0 in each race.
To a great extent (says a Southern ex change), Wingatui pulled herself to a standstill in both her races at the Gore Racing Club's meeting last week. In the Racing Club Handicap, P. Powell was blamed in some quarters for covering too much ground by the way, when it was obvious that Wingatui was proving more titan a handful. On the second day, when I). Lrodio was substituted for her first; day's pilot, Wingatui was galloped on the rails, with Lucy Locket on the outside keeping her there, but (he result; was much the same—she kept Brodie busy all the way in attempting to restrain her, and, finally, pulled herself into the ground and finished outside a place. At tho Williamstown meeting held in Victoria on February 11, the Aucklandowned sire Romeo was represented by a promising two-year-old colt, in the shape of Mystic Light, who won the Electric Handicap (five furlongs and a half) in good style, defeating a field of thirteen. Mystic Light, who is the first foal thrown by the Shepherd King mare Refinement, formed one of the collection of year-
lings sent across Io tho Sydney sale last autumn by Mr. Ernest Alison, and lie was bought by the Melbourne sportsman, Mr. A. G. Barlow, for 559 guineas. At Caulfield last Saturday Mystic Light led the field home in the second division of the Federal Slakes, and, as he apparently had matters all his own wav at the finish, he placed himself further in prominence. Mystic Light is well engaged in events ahead, and one of his early engagements is the Ascot Vale Stakes, of .£1590, to bo run at Flemington early next month. AUSTRALIAN TURF SCRATCHINGS FOR NEWMARKET AND AUSTRALIAN CUP. (Jtcc. February 27, 7.5 p.ra.) Melbourne, February 27. Tiie following scratchings are announced; — Newmarket Handicap.—Amounis, Valdes, Cheosun, Apis, Menander, Zanibar, Attraction, Ataman. Australia Cup.—Spcnfall, Answer. NOTES FROM RICCARTON Dominion Special Service Christchurch, February 26. Training operations assumed a more interesting aspect yesterday, _ when the majority of tho horses destined to race at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday next put in an appearance. The tracks were still hard and, with one exception, all fast work was executed on the plough. Limerick was galloped tix furlongs in company with Zaragoza. Ho gave the marc a couple of lengths break nt the start, but had her collared at the ton of the straight, crossing tho line with a slight advantage in the good lime of Im in. 16 3-.">sec. It was an effortless task on the part of the champion, while, on the other baud. Zaragoza executed a pleasing gallop, and she may got on the winning list in Sydney, when a soft track in encountered. Assurance mid Ranier were associated in a. mile gallop, the former finishing in front in Imin. 13 1-sscc. This was Assurance’s second pleasing gallop during the week, and he would have had good prospects in the Peninsula Cup next Saturday, hut was allowed to drop out. Rapier continues to improve and should bo in splendid order for the Wellington meeting. His owner was anxious that he should start in the Peninsula Cup, but his trainer consider, ed it inadvisable nt. this stage to tackle the ordeal with 10.13 on his back. Silver Coot, who has no, engagements, until tho Wellington meeting, has been executing good track work since tho Dunedin meeting, and to-day strode over four furlongs in 51 3-ssec. without much effort. Singlespear, who was brought back from Australia by Tt. W. King, showed a lot of pace by galloping four furlongs on the outside of the course proper in 49soc. This gelding is a bold galloper, but is hard to manage on the track, and only a strong horseman can control him. Rascal has displayed signs of soreness since racing last Saturday, and although executing useful work to-day, ho will not be seen out at tho Bonus Peninsula meeting. Polydectes had his first, fast work today since arriving at Rieearton. He appears in splendid racing condition, and will represent his new owner at the Waimafo meeting next month. During I’. D. Jones's absence in Australia. tho head stable lad, J. Russel], will have charge of the balance of the team at Rieearton. Stormy, First Sight, Synonym, and Gay Crest are to bo kept in active commission to race at tho forthcoming meetings, but the remainder are to bo given light tasks until Jones’s return. Projector has given every satisfaction iu his work of late and appears in good order to play a prominent part in forthcoming hutiilo events. He has been accepted for in tho Kinloch Handicap at the Banks Peninsula, meeting, but is an unlikely starter, unless a dry track prevails. Battle Colours was given strong work. He will make his i eappearaiice in public al tiie Waitualo meeting. .Martian Spear, half-brother by Greyspear to Rod Wink, is again one of tho active brigade, after a respite following on his visit to the West Coast at Christmas. Ho is well forward at present, but; it is not intended to race him until the Easter meeting nt Rieearton. Nincompoop is again a regular track worker, and shows tho benefit of his brief let-up. Present intentions ere to race him in the Waimalo Cup next month. If. Nurse has recently fallen in hand a five-veor-old gelding by Greyspear from the Martian marc Foil, the property of Mr. W. 0. Rutherford. Ho was 1 roken in as a thrcc-year-old, and has since been used as a station hack. G. J. Pino's stable will bo represented nt Motukarara by J'air Lxeimnge. Crossbow, and Don Jose, all of whom have shown promise in the ir recent track work. The first-named did not have a favourable passage at the G.J.C. summer meeting, and can be depended upon to show an improvement in next week’s engagement. T. H Gillett lias two representatives of his stable, Satrap and Magna Charlo, engaged'in the Peninsula Cup. The former, who will be ridden by C. Lmerson, galloped well on Saturday morning, covering a. mile comfortably in Bum. ■Usee., while Mngjia Charta was restricted to strong work. The big King Jo,m gelding also figures in the I lying Jltindica, and a decision has not yet. been arrived at as to which event ho will contest. .. Scoff is included in the acceptance list for the Banks Peninsula meeting, hut was not on tho track on Saturday. Although I ho mishap he encountered in his race the previous week is not considered of a serious nature, he is an unlikely visual' to the Motukarnra fixture. Tho Mason stable will send Shalimar and Philiipic to the Banks Peninsula jneotirg* <Uid both should I’un, oil. Philiipic is engaged in tho principal event, and although he has yet to show his liking for a distance, the impression gained by his ieeent win over seven furlongs at'Riccarton is sufficient to point to his prospects over a mile ami a quarter. The field will ho a small one, but Philiipic. will certainly help towards the totalisator investments on the race. Mr. .1. S. Barrett's two two-year-olds Tlic Viscount and Corsetierc were sprint, ed three furlongs to-day. tho time registered being 38sec„ with little between them at the finish. They will both be saddled up for their racing debut next Saturday, when they will contest the .Motukarara Juvenile Handicap, confined to two and three-year-olds. Great Star, the big dividend-payer at the G.J.C. summer meeting, will again appear in public at Motukarara next Saturday, lie was on tho tracks to-day, but was restricted to easy work; in fact prior to the Rieearton meeting all his fast work, which must have been of the creditable order, was executed when track-watchers were conspicuous by their absence, and it was on this account that little was known of the speedy Solferino youngster. J. AlcCombe is keeping Court. Jester, Amorist and Despot in steady work at Rieearton. Tho first-named will represent the stable next Saturday. The English gelding Honeycomb boat Luminant in a gallop to-day over live furlongs run in Imin. 3 4-sscc. Both will bn taken to Motukarara, and should run prominently. The former was not well served at tho start of the Trial Stakes at the recent summer meeting, but his effort in tho run home encouraged the view that he will bo seen to advantage in later engagements. Soltello has come 10 hand quickly since recommissioned by I*. Longley, and will be given a race at tho Banks Peninsula meeting. Ho and Motor Smash were associated in a four-furlong gallop to-day and both shaped well. Fiuora maintains her record of fast track work, and to-day easily accounted for Diana’s Lad and Te Awhina in a gallop over four furlongs. She is engaged in the Flying Handicap next Saturday, and if she is ever to win another race her opportunity seems (o bo in view in this poorly-filled event. Solforito was given two rounds of strong work to-day, and judging b.v the manner in which ho carried out his task there is little amiss with last year's Winter Cup winner. Footfall was sent over a mile journey and appeared to bo going well throughout. A definite plan ns Io this gelding's future programme has not yet been decided upon. ]■'. D. Jones will catch Friday's Sydney boat from Wellington with Limerick and Zaragoza. There is yet a possibility that. Arikiwai will be taken across by i he same boat <
