WOODVILLE MEETING HUIKAI WINS AUTUMN HANDICAP SPRINT TO MISS PAT Dominion Special Service. Woodville, February 2.5. The course to-day was in great order. Softened by the recent rain, it provided the best going horses have had for weeks past. The weather was tine, and the attendance fair. Both the principal handicaps resulted in surprises, lluikai winning tile middle distance event, and Miss Pat the sprint. The machine put through 4:12,972 on the dav, leaving a deficit, of <£l9s on the meeting, compared with last year. hopelands hurdles. Like the jumping race on the first day, the Hopelands Hurdles was a poor contest. Panorama, who was favourite, allowed the others to lead him till nearing home, when he ran to the front, and won by three lengths from Blue Peter, who was a couple of lengths clear of Sir Moment, with Polyphemus fourth. NOVICE PLATE. Maui was the favourite for the Novice Plate, and in the end lie won nicely. Molong, Vindication. lied Bank, and Skyrider were the early leaders. Tinii Inihi showed up nearing the straight, but once fairly in line for home, Maui came out of the bunch, and inn past (lie leaders to win by a length from ’find Inihi, who beat Lilock by a head. Vindication, with Molong and Skvrider, were next. Timi Inihi showed a considerable improvement on his first day’s form. AUTUMN HANDICAP. Of the Autumn Handicap field, David Garrick and Blimp were the best backed, but neither filled a place. Epistle, lluikai, and Blimp led through the straight from Arrow Lad and Royal Game, and along the, back Epistle wan clear of Huikai, Blimp, and Arrow Lad, witli Capitulation, Royal Game. Kilmiss, and Blackmint next. Turning for home. Capitulation, Epistle, and Arrow Lad were in lino at the bead of affairs, and David Garrick and Huikai were challenging. Huikai ran on best, and won bv half a length from Capitulation, who was only a head in front of Epistle, while David Garrick was a close fourth, and Arrow Lad, Kilmiss. and Blimp next. David Garrick might have won, had he been nearer the front when the last half mile was commenced. MANGAPAPA HANDICAP. Aston, who, drew No. 1 at the barrier, won the' Mangapapa Handicap all the way. He was not extended to win by a length and a half from Silver Tray, with Shining Star three quarters of a length away third, and Arch Arrow and David Garrick next. -Aston carried his 10.2, and won very impressively. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. Crown Area, who was backed io oddson. was a good thing beaten in the Telegraph Handicap. Sarcheee and Lin Arlington made the early running, with Crown Area at the back. Crown Area was last into the straight and failed by a length and a half to get to Miss Pat, who shot out a furlong from home and finished very smartly. .Royal Ceres was three lengths away third and Sarchee fourth. Miss Pat paid the best dividend of the meeting, and her effort was very creditable. Crown Area, how-
ever, would have won had he been take: nearer the front early in (he race. . DEBUTANTE STAKES. Amplifier and Mooregas carried tin money in the Debutante Stakes. Moore gas and Millais led to the straight from Amplifier and Spearmaid, will Agreeable next. Amplifier challenged a soon as the straight was reached, but Alooregas was too good and won _ by three-quarters of a length. Amplifici was a length and a half clear of Millais. and Australis and Agreeable were next. MA TIARA H ARA II AN DIC AP. Cosmetic and Tiesham were well backed for the Maharahara Handicap. Willow Wai led to the turn from Cosmetic, who then drew away ami won nicely by a length from Lady Gay, with Tros ham and Willow Wai almost in lint with her. Tresham ran a great race and should not be long. Lady Gay also went well. KUMEROA HANDICAP. The Swell, a warm favourite, wound up the meeting by winning the Kumeroa Handicap very easily and paying a good price. Aurora Borealis led into the straight, where The Swell got up on the rails and eventually won by two lengths from Red Fuchsia, who heat Aurora Borealis by the same distance. Vigilance was last. TE AROHA MEETING FIRST DAY’S RESULTS CUPS TO TRANSFORMER AND STAR COMET
Dominion Special Service. Te Aroha, February 25. The weather broke tine after rain for the first day’s racing at To Aroha. A big crowd attended, and the. racing was full of interest from first io last. Mr. C. E. -Macmillan, M.P., presented the cups won by Transformer and Star Comet. The Berries Memorial Cup was a thrilling nice, the actual winner, Gala Day, being placed second and the race awarded io Transformer. Claims fell just after the start of the last race and his rider, J. Cammick, suffered a broken collarbone. The totalisator investments reached .£29,518, against .£26,239 last year, an increase of £3279. RUAKAKA HURDLES.. Uralla and York Abbey carried the money in the Ruakaka Hurdles. Lady Spalpeen was left over fifty yards, York Abbey making the early place, but Uralla took charge six furlongs from homo and, attended at. the turn by Gold Rain and Lady Cintra, ran on nicely to beat Gold Rain by over a length. Lady Cintra was the same distance away third, with Lady Spalpeen, Red Comet, King Amans, and Ring Potoa all in a bunco next. . The winner won well, but Lady Spalpeen ran a great race and it looked as if she must have won with a decent start. Ring Potoa wont over a lot of ground and should improve.
WAITOA HANDICAP. Cybele and Idun monopolised the betting’ in the Waitoa Handicap. After Rose Arch and Cloudbank had put a good break on the field they stopped badly nearing tho turn, and Cybele and High Tide turned for home .dear of Idun, this trio disputing a good finish, Cvbelc geting home by half a. length from High Tide, with Idun a neck away well clear of Tcwaka, Partial .Eclipse, and Gold Dart. Nothing looks like improving enough to lent any of the placed horses on the second day. JUVENILE HANDICAP _
Wilmington was a solid favourite over Katarina in the Juvenile Handicap. In the enrlv stages. Avoncourt, Winnington, and Footpad raced, clear of Gold Money, and Katarina, but at the turn Avoncourt and Winnington had drawn out from Katarina an ’ Prodice, with Gold Money handy. The leaders went out on the turn, and Gold Money Shot through Io win easily by two lengths and a half from Prodice, who bent Avoncourt by a. length. Lucy Rose, Footpad, and Winnington being next. Winnington is not much, good, and Foot pud not ready. The winner is a very smart fillv, and the race should benefit both her an.l Avoncourt.
SHAFTESBURY MACK. Liaison and Welcome Home beaded tho pool in the Shaftesbury Hack. Appellant was soon in front from Billikins, Value, Air King, ami King Arch, this lot being prominent, throughout, Appellant winning nicely by two lengths from Value, with Welcome Home, who camo from a good way baeak, half a length away third, with Billikins, Air King, King Arch, and Bombaider next The winner returned over a score, and won well. He is very speedy, but affected in the wind. Air King and Bombardor did well enough to warrant a better performance in slightly weaker classes. Welcome Home should win soon. Liaiison got into trouble early, ami was never prominent. HERRIES MEMORIAL. Pegaway was o pronounced favourite over Lo Chaucas in the Merries Memorial Cup. Davguard set a fast pace from Gala Day, Lo Choucas, and Pegaway. there being little alteration until half a mile from home, whore Transformer moved up, and entering the straight Transformer was slightly in front of Gala Day, Queen Arch, Day Guard, and I.e Choucas. In a desperate finish, in which Gala Day ran out, and crowded Transformer and Lo Choucas. they finished in order, with about half a length between them and Dav Guard. Queen Arch, and Pegaway next. Pcgawav looked ns if a race would benefit aim. but Desert Glow, who was suffering from a corn in the foot, never threatened danger. It was a great race, with little between tho placed horses True Blood was sore, and ran badly, and inquiry bv tho Judicial Committee info interference with Transformer by Gala Day resulted in the first and second places being reversed, and E. Tuohev, rider of Gala Dav. being suspended for the rest of the day. WAIHOU HANDICAP. Paganelli and Ti Tree disputed favouritism iu tho Waihou Handicap. Nancy Lee was first out, but was soon headed bv Ballvmoy 1 and Paganelli, the latter taking a good lead at the turn from Ballyrnoy 11, Kingfield. and Royal Doulion. The latter finished well, but Pag-
anelli beat her nicely bv a length, with Nanev Lee hall a length away third, ami Ballyinoy 11, Daylight, and Kingfield next. I’aganelli won very nicely, but Royal Doulton was cut back at. the stall., ana was unlucky Io bo beaten. She is a much improved mare. Ti Tree did not seem to be going well at. any stage, and was possibly affected by the ground. CHAMPION HACK CUP. The Lover was a. better iancy than Micrometer in the Champion Hack Cup. Lord Abbev and Adjuster made, the early running from Schorr and Speechless, witii Micrometer and The Lover well back. Schorr took charge half a mile from home, and led round the turn from Pukerimu, Star Comet, and Micrometer. Star Comet shot out at tho distance, and. in a good finish, boat The Lover by half a length. Micrometer was a head away third, and then came Schorr, Speechless, and Pukerimu. The winner was another surprise victor. The Lover and Micrometer both came well from the back. The Lover getting a good run 011 the rails, whereas Micrometer was on tho outside all the way. She should improve. The beaten division are not much to enthuse over, but Speechless may do better, as she was always handy. HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP. Branson and Bright Day were favourites for tlie Hot Springs Huudieap. Romford went out. at the end of a furkmg to hold a big load from Wenday and High Pitch, but he was tiring at the turn, where High Pitch. Te Koroke, Town Bank, and Branson showed up. The favourite got through on the rails, and in a groat, finish, boat To Koroke bv a head. Bright Dav and Siaosi, who both finished well, wore right up next, and High Pitch and Lord Star next. It was a truly run race, in which Branson owed his victory to a lucky run at tho home turn. DETAILS OF THE RACING Bi’ Telegraph.— Press association Hamilton, February 25. NOTES AND COMMENTS (Bs’ “Vigilant.”) Broad Aero has made an auspicious start amongst the open sprinters, for in the Ituahin- Handicap at the first day of the Woodville meeting he made the rest of the field look only moderates. Besides having Broad Acre in his stable, G. New has Crown Area, so with two good sprinters to represent him in the future he should have many successes. Lady Limond does not seem to bo in such good form as she was a little while back, for both at Wanganui and Woodville she did not show her best. She should not be condemned, however, for these two failures, and possibly the racing will do her good. Lady Cynthia ran a very good race in finishing second to Aston the first day at Woodville, for she came from the rear of the field and eventually ran Aston to a neck. Oratrix seems to have been the unlucky runner in the Woodville Cup, for after meeting with interference she just failed to stall off David Garrick. G. New added another win and a second to his list of successes at W oodville on Saturday. He finished up the meeting with five firsts and one second. The two-year-old Roserea, half-brother to Limerick, by Rossendale, has rejoined F. D. Jones’s stable after a few months’ spell. Fair Exchange galloped well at Riccarton the other morning, covering six furlongs rn Imin. ISsec. nicely, and is a possibility at his next tart. Spean Bridge galloped King Balboa to a head in the Borough Handicap at Gore. The racing is sur to improve her, as she had to ba spelled for a little while owing to soreness. Half-a-Brace seems a queer name for a horse, but Dr. M. G. Louisson’s mare of that name is very appropriately named, being a twin foal by Bachelor’s Double, her' dam, Duenga, being by Matehmaker-Bailarina, by Herald. Half-a-Braco was imported in 192 C. The Gisborne-bred and owned gelding, White Fang, who won the Carnival Handicap (one mile and a quarter) at Flemington last November, figures among the entrants for the King’s Cup, to be run at Randwick in April, which points to another trip to Australia with the Polydamoa gelding, being a likely eventuality. White Fang won a couple of races at Gisborne recently, but the opposition was not what might bo termed high class. DANNEVIRKE REHANDIOAPB. By TelegeaPt:.—Press Association. Dannevirkc, February 25.
