The women’s swimming championships were continued yesterday. Results :— 100 YARDS BACKSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss E. Stockley (New Zealand) ...1 Miss E. Robertson (New South Wales) 2 Won by eight yards. Time, luiin. 22scc. 220 YARDS FREE STYLE CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss K. Miller (New Zealand) 1 Miss E. Davey (New South Wales) 2 Miss B Taw (New South Wales) ... 3 Won by four yards. Time, 2min. 52 3-ssec. Miss Miller led from the start in the 220 yards from Miss Taw. At 75 yards she had increased her lead to a yard, and fortv yards from the finish had the race well in hand. She swam a welljudged race. Miss Mealing (N.S.W.) led at the start of the backstroke championship and appeared the likely winner, but at the 50 yards she veered across the course over the barrier. Miss Stockley kept a good course and came home a winner by eight yards. Miss Mealing did not complete the course. The New Zealand swimmers’ ability has been commented upon in terms of high praise during the carnival. BRIDGE-TO-BRIDGE RACE WON BY W. RYLAND Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, February 26. The annual bridge-to-bridge race was held on Saturday afternoon, and was won by \V. Ryland from off the scratch mark. J. Campbell, winner of last year’s contest, was second, and H. Gowan third. As usual, the fixture attracted a large number of entries, including a few lady competitors. The race was followed by numerous boats, while the river bank was crowded with motorcars and carts of all descriptions. The town bridge, the finishing post, was packed from end to end, aud the crowd was estimated between three and four thousand. Within a quarter of a mile of the finishing post Ryland had a good lead, and, swimming strongly, won bv about 40 yards. He was given a rousing reception.
