TRIBUTE TO PIONEERS By Telegraph — press association Grevnioiith. February 26. The Prime Minister (Rt Hon. J. GCoates; arrived yesterday to attend the Grev District Jubilee, and to-dav aduressed a gathering of pioneers at the Old People’s Home on the occasion of a jubilee dinner at the home. He eulogised the work of the first comers to the West Coast and said it was due to the solid, silent work of the pioneers generally that the Dominion’s credit to-dav stood as high as ever ft stood. Later the Prime Minister attended the ceremonv of placing at the gate o the cemetery a magnificent large wreath in memory of the pioneers. Special jubilee services were held >n nil churches to-day. At the Anglican Church, .\rchdeacont York, of Blenheim, a former vicar of Mawhera preached and dealt interestingly tilth many phases of West Coast ear Iv lustorv At St. Patrick’s Church, Bishop Bffidie, of Christchurch, celebrated ppntificial High Mass, and paid a high tribute to the Coast pioneers, referring speciallv to their sustained w«rk tor religion' and humanity. ,At the Presbvterian Church, Rev. T N. Cuttle si’ioke on the significance of the jubilee, and at the Methodist Church the Rev. G. Biown gave a jubilee semion The main streets are brilliantly festooned. the coloured electric lights effect being excellent. A large number of visitors from al 1 parts of New Z,e-x--land, and somas froth Australia, aie joining in the festivities A new co-operative colliery, under the State Mines Department, opening on Tuesday, is named the Jubilee ColA’partv of navals from H.M.S Veroncia which is visiting here for the jubilee’ attended the Anglican service, at which the Prime Minister was also present. The main celebrations will commence on Tuesday.
