FUTURE OF WIRELESS
SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS PREDICTED MR. MARCONI LOOKS AHEAD BY Telegraph.-Press association. Copyright. London, February 24. Mr. Marconi, interviewed, predicted sensational developments in wireless within two or three years. “Wireless has now an immeasurably greater horizon than it had previously. Its renewed possibilities point to a changed world. 1 am certain that there will be soon telephonic communication with all the Dominions, but full Imperial development depends largely on the attitude of the Government, on which rests the responsibility for schemes for the delay or encouragement and development. Facsimile transmission, whereby whole sheets of manuscript can be transmitted in the original form, will ultimately succeed Morse, because it is quicker and cheaper.” Referring to the secrecy of wireless, he said that a crytograph amounted almost to a secret system in which the receiving instruments sorted out apparently a meaningless jumble of words. Referring to the wireless conference. Mr. Marconi said that the value of cables in the past had been very great, but “I hesitate to pass an opinion on their future.”
WIRELESS CONFERENCE DIVERGENCE REGARDING TWO MAIN PRINCIPLES London, February 24. The Wireless Conference is sitting dailv for the purpose of speeding up the'decision to enable delegates to return home. 'The evidence is completed and the sole remaining task is to agree to recommendations upon which the conference is at present at variance, the Australians and New Zealanders unitediv insisting on two main principles: (1) No increase in rates; (2) maintenance of Government supervision. It is understood that Britain sympathises with this attitude, but the others are not certain. Meanwhile, Marconi and the Eastern Company are negotiating independently. —A.I’.A. and “Sun.” IMPORTANCE OF BEAM DEVELOPMENT London, February 24. "It is most important that beam wireless should be developed to it> utmost extent in the interest of cheap ami rapid communications,” says the bederation of British Industries, in a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Postmaster-General in connection with the Wireless and Cables Conference. “Bnt the federation fears that the conference mar result in a policx of hampering the development of wireless or preventing a reduction in wireless rates. 1 lie federation trusts that the Government give an assurance that nothing will be done to hamper the freeest ami fullest development of wireless. As important users of wireless and cables as well as taxpavers, the federation strongly urges the Government to entrust to commercial hands Government-operated systems. It would wipe out a deficit and improve the services A.P.A- and “Sun.”
