PROHIBITION LAWS
HOOVER REPLIES TO BORAH QUESTIONNAIRE Washington, February 24. Mr. Herbert Hoover, in answer to Senator Borah's prohibition questionnaire, stated that lie does not favour the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. “I stand, of course, for the efficient, vigorous, and sincere enforcement of the laws enacted thereunder,” added Mr, Hoover.
Some amusement was caused by Senator Willis’s comment that his reply was much more concise than Mr. Hoover’s, particularly as all candidates necessarily must endorse what is the law of the land.
Last month Senator Borah began a Campaign to place all candidates for Republican Presidential nomination on record regarding prohibition. Senator Borah sent Senator Curtis a public letter asking for a statement of his attitude, and announced that he intended sending a similar letter to all Republican candidates. Senator Borah asked Senator Curtis whether he favoured a prohibition plank in the Republican platform, and also what would be Senator Curtis’s attitude towards enforcement, if elected; also whether he would favour an executive programme to enable States to determine the alcoholic content of liquor sold within their borders, and also whether he would favour the repeal of the Volstead Act or the Eighteenth Amendment.
