OLD-TIME CRICKET
Rude pictorial delineations prove that a crude form of cricket was played to far back as the twelfth century. From that time onwards, up to within tho last couple of hundred years, its history is steeped in legendary, and very little value can be placed upon so-called facts. The game reached the acinu of popularity during the eighteenth century, and matches were clayed for sums ranging from 500 Io 1000 guineas a side. The M.C.C. was instituted in 1787, and 40 years later took upo its headquarters at Lord’s. Tho first established club, however. was Tfambtcdon, formed in 1750. Originallv all bowline was of the underhand vi-i'iety. In 1825 round-arm bowling was legalised, which permitted the bowler to deliver the ball nt any angle, providing bis baud was not above tho level of his elbow. It was not until 40 years lal'-r that over-arm bowling was sanctioned.
