WOODVILLE MEETING OPENS
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By
"Vigilant.”)
'the A'.vapuni trainer. G. New, had a very sueeesstul day at 'Woodville yesterday', leading in no fewer limn four winners—Shining Star, Broad Acre, Moorgas. and Duke Abbey—a truly good performance. I p till yesterday, New had led in twenty-two winners fur the sea-
I'or the To Aloha meeting, which opens to-day, there uro first-class fields. The Iterries Memorial Handicap is headed by Pegawny, 9.0, and if in good order, the task should not bo beyond him. Transformer and Le Choucas may be the dangerous ones. In the Wiiihou Handicap. the chief sprint event, which looks particularly open, B.dlymoy II has struck form again, and will possibly start favourite, plying Juliet and 'Tea 'l’imo also look possibilities. Tn the Juvenile Handicap, J. T. Jamieson appears to have a strong hand in Winnington and Footpad. The bitter showed a lot of pace at Wanganui, when obviously not ready.
Tt lias been reported that before Eulalie had started this season, she was in the private sale list for 50(10 guineas, and notwithstanding the fact that she has since won the Stewards' Handicap, she docs not appear to have been a good proposition at that figure, for her form of late lias been disappointing. After her brilliant victory in the Stewards’ Handicap, her prospects of winning some of the important short distant v.cight-for-age races appeared particularly bright, but her efforts at Auckland end Wellington were poor.
Speechless lias done a good preparation in view of her engagement in the Champion Hack Cup at To Aroha today. 11. Wiggins, her usual pilot, will ride her in the big hack event, and that will bo something in her favour, for this horseman is riding in good form at the present time, says an exchange.
S. Henderson, who steered Liaison to victory in the Moana Handicap on tho second day of tho Takapiina mooting, will ride that filly in her engagements at To Arolia to-day.
Miss Myrtle was not taken to Te Aroha with tho rest of J. Buchanan’s team, so that trainer will have only Envoy and Nassock to represent him at tho country meeting.
Princess Ronnie worked very freely over a round at Ellerslie the other morning. She was not doing her best al. any part of 1 lie journey, which she traversed in Imin. iti 2-ssec. When the Franklin, meeting arrives thia mare promises to bo in rare fettle and should bo hard Io beat in her engagements at that fixture.
Arikiwai, says a southern writer, has been thrown out of work, and lie will have an easy limo for a few' weeks. He has earned a. rest, as lie has had a, busv season, during which ho Jias paid his way well, -while ho has improved so steadily ns to give (ho impression that he will bo a really good performer next season.
At Tticearlon on Thursday morning, Rapier, Assurance and Lancer went out together for a seven-furlong spin. Unfortunately they went off iu straggling order. Rapier conceding the other pair a. long start. Ho mado up n. lot of his leeway, finishing just behind Assurance, with Lancer not .far away. Rapier's timo was Irnin. Msec.
Countersign and .Rotor wcre given a dose of physic this week, and they arc having a spell for a few days. E. Scoullar hopes to have them in. work again next week, as he intends to race them at Waimate.
A. McAulay has Sir Roy and Sagittarius nominated for the Waimate meeting. They look well, though their tasks lately have not been very strenuous.
Carrying half a clone overweight, Eka ran well enough al; Wanganui to be a possibility at any time now.
At Hastings, Mnrsurd, alone, accomplished a fair gallop ovvr six furlongs, taking Imin. 17!sec. for this distance, which was tho best of tho morning. If the tliree-ycar-old filly does not run prominently in the near future something is wrong somewhere, says a northetu exchange.
At Rieciuton the other morning Limerick gave Synonym a start of two lengths and beat him over half a mile in 50sec. Limerick went with great dash.
Hoylako has hail little fast work during flio past fortnight, and his forward i unuing in the .Post Handicap at. Riccarton must have pleased his connections. Tho imported horse has been nicely weighted at 7.1 in tho Peninsula Cup, and as he is very well at present he will not bo neglected in tho ten-fur-long event. A couple of months back there was a feeling that HoylakO was not over-genuine, but since the New Year lie has raced very generously.
W. G. Hobbs is keeping Luminant, Mcrivale, and Honeycomb going in useful tasks, and probably will lace them al \\ annate next month.
Tresliam. who is now under the care of T. F. Quitilivati, made his reappearance nt Woodville yesterday after a short "let up.” He has been galloping well of Into, and the race is sure to imI wo him.
Seatown, says an exchange, is in great buckle at his owner's farm at Stratford. He is to complete his year’s spell, ami goes into ,1. F. Butler’s stable tn a mont n or so.
Battle Colours, who ricked a shoulder when t.-ncing in tho Wyndham Cup, has made a good recovery. He has done only useful pace work lately, but D. (lampbell has now started to ecu 1 him along a bit: faster. 11.0 will probably bo at H annate.
11. J. Ellis is now established as a trainer in South Canterbury. He has purchased a. property on the main road, near the Washoyko r;icecoui;se, wnere ho is having the necessary buildings erected. In the meantime fie is in temporary quarters. Ho lias ten liTTses unuer his earc, but tho list, includes a bale!) of Mr. J. M. Samson’s yearlings, purchased at Tien th a m last month. Some of (ho older members of the team will bo prepared for jumping races. Rhondda wilt be given a race over nurdlcs al Waimate, while Isisl: Thought ami Arpent will be tried as steeplechasers.
Reports from Australia had been crediting the ex-Auckland gelding Quandong with showing a lot of promise nt recent schooling tasks over hurdles. At the recent. Rosohill meeting the Quaiitock gelding finished second to Stony in a maiden hurdle race, and can bu expected to improve as lie gains experience.
Star Stranger IT, who figures in Hie nominations for tho Banks Peninsula meeting, is the Quin Abbey gelding recon Uy sent back to Christchurch rjy Air. J. Behan, of Vancouver. Ho was Io race al the latter centre under Ibo name of Star Stranger, but now that tie is back in his homeland, he is apparently to bo allowed to retain the mime, but with the appendage. Up to last season much confusion was caused by tho similarity in the names <f Star Stranger and Star Ranger, who were often engaged at tho olio meeting.
Tho Marlborough Racing Club’s summer meeting will bo held on Thursday and Saturday next, March 1. and 3, and tho fixture will no doubt attract a number of Wellington patrons. Tho Tamnliinc will lopve Wellington on Wednesday and Friday at. 3 p.m., and the return after tho races can be made on Sunday from J’iclou nt fi p.m. The Tamnhino is making her fortnightly Sounds excursion on Sunday. March i, and visitors to the races can inrnvdo this trip. Over an inch of rain foil at Wnterlea racecourao during Thtusdny night, and ns a consequence the going should bi» first-class. Acceptances close on .Monday novi. WOODVILLE MEETING G. NEW PRODUCES FOUR WINNERS DAVID GARRICK AND BROAD ACRE SCORE Dominion Special Service. Woodville, February 21. Tho feature of to-day’s racing at Woodville was the success of the horses from the stable of G. New, who won four races, three of them in succession. His successful quartet, were Shining Star, Moorgas, Broad Acre, and Duke Abbev. Tho Woodville Cup was won narrowly by David Garrick, who got the track to his liking, and improved considerably on his recent efforts. Oratrix ran a great race, and was a good Second, even though circumstances were somewhat against her. Broad Acre, in favour of whom Crown Area was scratched, ran away with the principal sprint, and the racing Moorgas has had enabled him io wit) the two-year-old event. The course wns greasy as a result of rain, which commenced on Thursday night, and fell lightly through tho day, _ The attendance was fair, and tho totnlisator registered ,-£13,170, which is Jb‘224 less than the Sum registered on tho first day a year ago. ORINGI HURDLES. The Oringi Hurdles marked tho continued failure of Polyphemus, who was sent out a short-priced favourite. Panorama lay well back for tho greater- part of the journey, but was in charge qt Hie last hurdle, and won easily by three lengths from Blue Peter, who beat Polyphemus bv four lengths. Polyphemus was in trouble far from home, and Axle, who made some of the early running, did not hold his place for long. MAIDEN STAKES. After numerous attempts to win a race, Shining Star scored in the Maiden Stakes, for which Sneerer was made favourite. When tho field was turning for home, Shining Star, Vindication, Keen, Molong. and Akalama were almost in line. Shining Star’s condition stood to him in the run home, and he won byhalf a length from Vindication, who was a head in front of Molong. Alabama was a fair fourth. Vindication paid a big price for second. Akalama ran like one who might improve a little. WOODVILLE CUP. 'The machine indicated that opinion was well divided respecting the chances of tho Cup horses, Joy Bird, Oratrix, Lady Limond, and Blimp all being solidly backed. Joy Bird was the best backed of all. Blimp set out to make tho running, and Lady Limond, Twink, and Capitulation were handy. Half a mile from home Capitulation and Blimp wdfe in front from Lady Limond and Twink, with Joy Bird, David Garrick, Huikai, Oratrix, and Black Mint following. Capitulation still was in front at the entrance to the straight but. Joy Bird and Oratrix bad closed on her, and the others were bunched behind them, with Black Mint making a spasmodic effort on the outer. Oratrix soon took charge, and the race looked as good as over, but David Garrick camo with a late run, and beat Oratrix by a head. After a gap of four lengths, camo Novar, with Joy Bird fourth, Cohesion fifth, Lady Limond sixth, and Blimp seventh. David Garrick was suited by the stingJess track, while Oratrix would have done better bad no rain fallen. In addition she had a lot taken out of her in the middle stages of tho race, and that prevented her from holding David Garrick off at the end. Blimp was mado a lot of use of, but in any case was disappointing. Black Mint did not hit out freely, but put in a fast, run crossing the top, an effort Im did not sustain. Lady Limond was not soon at her best, but. her turn will come. Joy Bird ran a fair race without ever looking really dangerous. COUNTY HANDICAP. Aston wou tho County Handicap from end to end. and paid n big price. Little ' Queen and Dreamy were in behind him / nt the homo turn. He drew away, but in the end he had only a short neck to [ spare from Lady Cynthia, who finished
fast on the outside. Little Queen was a couple of lengths away third, and Vigilance was a fair fourth. Lady Cynthia was unlucky not to win, but Aston surprised by the manner in which he stayed on. Vigilance was strongly fancied, but did not hit out. with Tier usual freedom, and should do better shortly. RUAHINE HANDICAP. Broad Acre was the good thing of tho day. Jlis stable mate, Crown Area, was withdrawn from the Ruahine Handicap, and Broad Acre was favourite. Ho was near tho front all the way, and in. tiie straight came away to win very easily by three lengths from Arrow Lad, with Royal Cores a length and a half away third, and Coot, .Miss Pat, and Epistle next. Broad Aero vanquished his field with ridiculous case. SA VI.) NG STAKES. Amplifier was backed as unbeatable in tho Sapling Stakes. Ho was in behind Millais all the way to the straight, ami bad Millais beaten nearly a furlong from home, but Moorgas finished on strongly, and beat the pair of them. Moorgas won bv two lengths from Amplifier, and tho same distance separated Amplifier and Millais. Australis was fourth, and Boston fifth. Amplifier was rather big in condition, and seasoning rather than speed won the race for Moorgas. Millais had every chance. Boston is a well-grown, improving sort. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Duke Abbey and Tho Swell carried the money in tho President’s Handicap, and they both paid dividends. Crossing tho fop Willow W hi was out in front: with Cosmetic and Royal Game handy, and Duke Abbey, Tresliam, Keen, and The Swell next. There was not much change as the straight was entered, but Duke Abbey was travelling very smoothly on tho rails, and The Swell was moving fast round tho field. Duke Abbev had charge a furlong from home, and eventually won easily by a length from The Swell, who was two lengths in front of Kilmovler. Cosmetic, Kilmiss, Willow Wai. and Tresliam were next.
Duke Abbey's was a nice performance, and nothing had a chance with him. He was the fourth winner G. New led in during the afternoon. The Swell ran a good race, nnd two whom tho gallop should improve are Royal Game and Kilmovler. VICTORIA HANDICAP.
Of the roor field which contested the Victoria Handicap. Talisker and Grand National were the best Lacked. Talisker led into the straight, where Grand National and Aurora Borealis ran up to him, and appeared to have him beaten, but. kicked up fo his work. Talisker came again, and won in tho last stride bv a head from Grand National, with Aurora Borealis a short neck away, and Braeman fourth. REVIEW OF THE FIELDS Dominion Special Service, Palmerston North, February 24. Rain is falling lightly this evening, and a soft course at Woodville to-mor-row seems assured. Again there will bo a small field in the Hurdles, and the best of those engaged might be Blue Peter and Panorama. Maui, Vindication, and Molong are likely to be fancied in the Novice. If Lady Limond and Black Mint were to run to form, they could be expected to be in the money in the Autumn Handicap, but both ran very moderately to-day. Perhaps David Garrick, Royal Game, and Blimp will be the hardest to beat. The distance will suit Joy Bbd, but the track conditions might be against her. Aston and Arch Arrow go five furlongs so well that they are sure to be fancied for the Jllangapapa Handicap. Lady Cynthia will take a lot. of shaking off if she is close to the leaders at the entrance to the straight. Despite a rise of 111 b., Aston looks sure to go particularly well. Crown Area will dominate the market, in the Telegraph Handicap, with Royal Ceres and Cosmetic, if she starts, in some request. Cosmetic is in another race, and bettors will lake the view that Crown Area is a higher class than the rest of the field. Cosmetic and Willow Wai ran well enough to-day to be seriously considered in the Maharahara Handicap. The race Amplifier had this afternoon should improve him sufficient for the Debutante Stakes. As The Swell and Vigilance have other engagements the way may be left clear for Red Fuschia in the Kumeroa Handicap. WAIAPU MEETING JEN WINS THE STAKES BY Telegraph.—press association Gisborne, February 23. The annual meeting of the Waiapu Racing Club was held at Ruatoria in fine weather to-day. Won by half a length, one length between second and third. Time, Imin. 22 2TE AROHA FIELDS Dominion Special Service. Te Aroha, February 21. The fine weather ended to-day, and a fair amount of rain has fallen here. So far it has not been sufficient, to affect the track, but at present it is overcast, with intermittent light showers. A large number of horses are on the scene, and a successful meeting is assured if the weather does not become too bad. This afternoon Wee Marble and Mochau were the only’ scratchings, but Abbey Day, who cut her lip badly yesterday, will not start till the second day. Paganelli is regarded as an unlikely starter, but the pen has not yet been put. through his name. Matinee’s owner has not yet decided, but he may reserve him for the second day. Gala Day has two engagements, but will start in the Cup, with E. Tuohey in the saddle. Jamieson has a team of eight on the scene, comprising Le Choucas, Ln the Shade, Welcome Home, Mithra, Footpad, Winnington, Titree and Prince Otto. Little form is available for the Ruakaka Hurdles, but Uralla, Red Comet and York Abbey read a likely trio to carry the money. The Waitoa Handicap field is composed mainly of green ones, and previous experience may stand to Idun, Cybele, and High Tide. i The Mithra-Winnington bracket would’ be favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, but Mithra is not a certain starter, and Footpad and Katerina are likely to have good followings. With twenty-five acceptors in the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap, backers are set a hard task, but when final figures are adjusted it may be found that Liaison, Air King and Ladies’ Boy are at the head of the pool." Most of the Cup acceptors will face the starter, and the first four on the list will carry the public confidence, with Pegaway and Le Choucas, perhaps, the absolute favourites. There seems a doubt about a number of the Waihou Handicap field keeping their engagements, and in an open race Tea Time, Titree and Macroom may be in most demand. There are a number of fair staying hacks in the Champion Hack Cup, but as Micrometer, Speechless and The Lover are all on the scene in good order, the public may back that trio fairly evenly. With Gala Day a likelv defection from the Hot Springs Handicap, there still remain haff a dozen with even chances, but late form says most for Branson, Quincoma and Siaosi. FIXTURES.
