Ilelliwell, A. J. McCurdy, H. A. Parkinson, G. Petherick, C. B. Robinson, E. Windley, Itev. H. van Staveren, Mesdames A. McVicar, J. K. Preston, and M. Semple. I'he Minister’s consent to the carrying out. of the improvements and paving in front of the new buildings at a cost of £1032 was received. The Finance Committee recommended that members of the Loyal Antipodean Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F.. bo charged at half rates for maintenance in the hospital, minimum charge 10s„ and that the period for the present agreement coincide with arrangements made with other friendly societies as to the date of termination. The recommendation was adopted.
On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided flint a grant cf £BO (inclusive of salary) be made to any nurse selected to undergo the post-graduate course for training of tutor sisters, and that the nurse shall enter into a bond of like amount to remain in the board’s service for two years after completion of the course.
It was stated that owing to the difficulty experienced by the medical superintendent in filling vacancies on the resident house-surgeon staff, the Hospital Committee bad decided to consider the question of salaries paid in comparison with other hospitals. In presenting the report of the medical superintendent upon the cases treated during the month under all headings. Mr. F. Castle, chairman of the Hospital Committee, mentioned that there was a marked decrease under several headings compared with last year. He did not know if it was due to daylight saving or to the hot weather, but nearly all departments showed a decrease. They might put it down to daylight saving.
The chairman: A compliment to Mr. Siflev.
The Social Welfare Committee reported that the number of unemployed relieved in January was 127 married men and casual relief was given to the extent of £77 to single men. Since the returns had been made up there had been a tendency for the number to increase. although the return showed a decrease on the figures for December. Reporting upon the Ohiro Homes, Mr. Fetherick said some small alterations had been made which would enable them to accommodate six or seven more inmates, but any further admissions would have to be met by an extension of the buildings. Looking on the buildings from the 'Terrace recently he had come to the conclusion that Ohiro Homes were a disgrace to the board. They bad not been painted for some years. It had been placed on the estimates, but had not been done, as other costs had increased so heavily. They must face the position now. The painting of Ohiro Homes nnd McCarthy Home, it was stated, would be provide*! for in the next estimates.
