DEPARTMENTAL PICNIC

The staff of the State Fire and Accident Department held a successful picnic at Day’s Bay. under favourable conditions. There was a record attendance of members and friends, and a comprehensive i.rogramnte, comprising cricket, swimming, sports, and tennis, was arranged, in which all present participated. Luncheon and afternoon tea were provided at the pavilion. The chairman of the picnic committee took the opportunity on behalf of the staff to welcome home the general manager (Mr. Jerrain), who, in acknowledging the welcome, expressed his appreciation of the committee's efforts, and gave a very interesting accou.it < 1 his recent trip abroad. The branch manager (Mr. Osborn), also congratulated the committee. and at his request cheers for Ivlr. Jcrram were heartily given. The results of the various events were as follow:— The cricket match Head Office v. Wellington branch was declared a draw Swimming—Mixed relay: Miss Jlatchard and Mr. Hunter Divisional relay: Accounts team. Diving competition-. Cross, 1: Wakelin. 2. Ladies’ nail-driving competition: Mrs. Himphries. Married ladies’ race: Mrs. Matthews, 1; Mrs. Brown, 2. Single ladies’ race: Miss Venables, 1; Miss Mawby, 2. Cigarette race: Miss Nash and Mr. Gill. Mixed relay: Miss Griffiths, Miss Harper, Mr. Kennedy. and Mr. Seamer comprised the winning team. Elopement race: Miss Ryan and Mr. Chegwidden. Three-legged race: Miss Mason and Mr. Chapman Wheelbarrow race: Miss Venables and Mr. Brew. 100 yards office handicap: Studholme. 1; Gill. 2. Divisional relay: Accounts team. Tennis (final): Miss Burke and Mr. Kennedy.
