HORTICULTURE

NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE. The executive council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture met on .Thursday, Mr. F. J. Nathan presiding. The necessary articles being available it was decided to proceed with the puniication of Bulletin No. 5. It was reported that the regulations, prepared to govern tho conduct of examinations by the institute under the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Act, 1927, would be gazetted shortly, after which the institute's educational programme would be put into operation.

lhe diploma design, it was stated, had been finally decided upon, and was now in the hands of the printer. The issue of a further 11 diplomas, making 35 in all, had been authorised by the executive. Sixteen applications were being held over pending further consideration. It was sta.ed that the institute had under consideration the question of protection for growers of registered new varieties of plants, and steps were being taken to gather information as to the action contemplated or taken in other parts of the world. The secretary reported that proposals for the establishment of u > .itional notanic gardens scheme had been sent out to the curators of the principal public gardens in New Zealand asking for suggestions in order that the scheme might >e made as effective os possible.
