BUTTER GRADING ADOPTED BY ARGENTINE The New Zealand Dairy Produce Board has received a letter from its Argentine correspondent stating that the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture has arranged a service of classification
or grading of export butter on the following lines; — The butler will be classified according to the following points:—Flavour, I 50; texture and humidity, 25; colour, I 10; salted or uusalted, 10; appearance and finish, 5. The respective section of the Ministry will extend special certificates, signed in duplicate by the inspector who made the examination, one of which will be giveu to the manufacturer and the j other filed. The boxes which have been I revised and classified will bear the in--1 speetor’s mark, and the date at which he made the classification. In order to identify the* boxes the manufacturer must stamp on each before inspection the date of elaboration and the number of the churu. This service will be started on January 1 for a provisional trial period of six months. During this first period no classification mark will be stumped on the boxes. The service will bo free of charge, and must bo solicited at least three days before shipment. 'lho Ministry further states in this resolution that it is convenient to increase the official control of butter shipments in order to stimulate the improvement in quality, the same as it is done in other countries, and further states tho advisability to establish an official mark for first-class export butter. It has now to be seen how this service will work out in practice, but in any case it is a good step forward, and once introduced will be continued after the trial period, says the correspondent. Of course, some mistakes may occur at the beginnintr. until the new butter classifying officials are well trained and their verdV’s trustworthy. In any case the intensive campaign started to obtain official classification has brought fruits and can only be for tho benefit of onr dairy industry, which is badly in need of it.
