FRANCE BEATS AUSTRALIA BOROTRA TOO GOOD FOR PATTERSON By Telegraph.—press association. Copyright CRec. February 22, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, February 22. The second senes of tennis Tests, France v. Australia, were concluded in fine weather, on fast courts. France won the series by six rubbers to three. The third series will be played at Melbourne. To-day’s matches resulted: — Crawford beats Brugnon. Crawford defeated Brugnon, B—6, 6—l. In the first set the Australian was behind 5 —2, playing badly, but recovered splendidly, volleying well, and his serving was fine. The long set tired Brugnon more than Crawford, who. except for a brief spell, played a brilliant allround game. It was Crawford’s best display during the carnival. Borotra Beats Patterson. Borotra defeated Patterson, 6 — l, 6 —2. The visitor was more active, making remarkable recoveries. In the first set Patterson was in good form, but faded away. His serving was fairly good, but he was .weak in other phases of his play. Borotra was right at the top of his form with his side-line drives. His success made France five rubbers to three, ensurng a French victory in the .Tests. Frenchmen Win the Doubles. Borotra and Brugnon defeated Patterson and Hopman B—6,8 —6, 5 —7, fl —2. The winners showed better combination. Otherwise there was little difference in the play. Patterson displayed much improvement on his previous efforts. Hopman returned finely.
