DR. R. J. TILLYARD
DEPARTURE FOR AUSTRALIA Dr. R. J. Tillyard, of the Cawthron Institute, who has been appointed Director of the Commonwealth Entomological Research Service, left Wellington last night for Auckland to connect with the Ulimaroa for Sydney. Dr. Tillyard’s new duties will commence at the beginning of next month, and at an early date he will proceed to England to ’make arrangements for the establishment of entomological supply stations in Great Britain, Southern Europe, and probably in America. Ravages by insect’pests in Australia are considerable, an estimate of damage for one bad vear being £10,000,000, and in order to cope with them central laboratories and insectaries are to be erected at Canberra and sub stations in various parts of the Commonwealth. The New Zealand Government retains the services of Dr. Tillyard in an advisory capacity in connection with the noxious weeds investigations at Cawthron.
