MEETING OF COUNCIL DEGREES AWARDED BY Telegraph.—press association. Christchurch, February 22. At a meeting of the University Council to-day it was resolved that the council ask for power to appoint one ot its members as pro-chancellor without salary who will, in the absence of the. chancellor, exercise such of the chancellor’s duties as shall not be delegated by the council to the vice-chan-cellor. It was decided to take no action on the proposal of the Academic Board that the standard, of the matriculation be raised to a point approximately halfway between the present standard matriculation and that of the entrance scholarship. The council resolved to refer back to the Entrance Board lor further consideration the whole question of the system of marking for matriculation examination. The application of the real estate institute for authority to conduct examinations was refused. The Christie Prize in Anatomy was awarded to J. C. R. Hendenach (Otago). Dr. Tillyard was appointed to act as external examiner in the examination for the degree Ph. Dz. The question of having different degrees for internal and external students was deferred till next annual meeting. The following resolution was carried: “That the council should consider applications from returned soldiers who have been prevented from pursuing their studies for some years because of war disability.” Consideration of the cases of five applicants were remitted to the Wellington centre with power to act. The following degrees and diplomas were conferred on the successful candidates by the chancellor of the university, Professor Macmillan Brown. Doctor of Medicine: Muriel Helen Easterfield.
