SCOUT NOTES

(By “Rover.”) District Scoutmaster G. Bell, who is now touring abroad, addressed our Commissioner, Sir Alfred Hobbin, from London as follows:—“Dear Sir Alfred, 1 am sending this card lo you hoping all's well in scouting in Wellington. Am having quite a nice time here, being very well received by headquarters and all places I visit. There is no doubt about the scout spirit being real. lam continually meeting wearers of the badge, and nearly every time receive a nod or smile. Am looking forward to meeting old friends soon again, and trust all troops arc doing well and have had a good camping season. Best wishes to all.—Gerald Bell.” On Saturday last the residents of Hutt Valley and Petone, alas, not in sufficient numbers, saw a tine display by a large number of Scouts, Rovers, and Wolf Cub packs. The fine sunny afternoon lent brightness to the varied Scout clothes of the troops. District Scoutmaster Nelson and Assistant McKenzie were the leaders of the rally, and much credit is due to their united efforts in arranging this splendid display. The District Commissioner, after the grand rally rush, read apologies and best wishes from the Prime Minister. Members of the Cabinet and others The Mayor of Wellington spoke a few helpful wolds, and after cheering tho Mayor and visitors, the scouts gave various displays of bridge building, games, inissioner work, tope spinning, camp work, ambulance work, etc., and were inspected by those present. A grand march past finished up a really good afternpon. The ladies superintended tea and ice cream and the Petone Band, an ever staunch supporter, supplied a well chosen programme of music.

Miramar held a first birthday party, and thanks are due to Mrs. Phillips for the use of her. well-equipped tea rooms. A full muster ot Scouts and Wolf Cubs entertained a large gathering of patents and friends with song, recitation, violin solos, etc. Sir Alfred Bobin, District Scoutmaster Donkin, and Scouter Smithers were preiient. Many proficiency badges, service stars and King’s Scouts were presented to various Scouts by the District Commissioner. Cheers and thanks for the troop cominitte, Mrs. Phillips, visitors and for the future success of the troop were heartily given. February 10 was a memorable one in the annals of the Terrace Troop and Wolf Cub pack, when a farewell evening was tendered their Oubmaster. Miss Heath. The evening commenced with the “Going Up” ceremony of Cubs G. Mac Kay, E. Kirkby, A. Campbell, G. Fisher, followed by the promotion of Cubs J. Morris. J). Kirkby. and E. Lambic to Sixers, and V. Faulkner and A.. MacKay to seconds. This concluded, ail visitors adjourned to the supper room. Among those present were Sir Alfred Robin, District Scoutmaster Donkin, District Cubmastcr Green and Bugg. Scouter Clark. Mrs. Hubbard, Misses Scot ter and Jenkins, chairman of the troop committee, Mr. Lancaster. Sir Alfred Robin spoke of Miss Heath’s good work in thq movement and presented her on behalf of the committo with a tortoise shell manicure set. District Scoutmaster Donkin expressed regret at Miss Heath leaving, for during the eighteen months she had been attached to the Terrace Pack, her help to other troops had been considerable. District Cubmastcr Green welcomed the new Cubmaster, Miss Jenkins. and made special mention to Mis 3 Heath’s originality during her teaching of the Cubs. The Rev. E R. Weeks said that thanks were due to Scouter Smither for his excellent service to the troop and the splendid co-operation that

existed between him and Miss. Heath. Scouter Smithers apologised tor the absence of District Scoutmaster Nelson, who, unfortunately, could not attend, also an apology was received iroin AkelaLeader Miss Nancy Wilson ’or her unavoidable absence. Miss Heath, in reply, expressed pleasure in seeing so many present at the Council Rock, and wished Cubmaster Miss Jenkins the best of Hick with the Cub Pack. “For She s a Jolly Good Fellow,” followed by the National Anthem, brought to a close a most happy and entertaining night. Cambridge troop committee held then first meeting of the year, a good number being present. The reports received from Scouters Grono and Pearce indicated that the week spent in camp find been all that could be desired. Visiting Day was much appreciated by those who went out to see the boys having such a good time. The troop is now settling down to work, and looking forward to a successful time during the coining SWIMMING SPOUTS. Record entries (306) were received for the annual swimming sports of the Wellington District Boy Scouts, winch were held in the Riddiford Baths. Lower Hutt, on Saturday night.
