THE RACING WORLD

(By
“Vigilant.”)
'l'he Canterbury sportsman, Mr, J. If, Prosser, has, during his career as an owner-breeder, produced some speedy horses, and his colours were again successfully carried in the Lyttelton .Plato at. Jtiecarton last Saturday l»v Great Star. Although he started from the outside of the field, he was quickly, in front, ami at the finish he was going away from his opponents, all of whom were under pressure. Great Star is a sturdily built youngster by Solferino, from Theda. There have been excuses made for several runners that took part in the Lyttelton Plate, but there is no doubt that the best one in the field won. Royal Ceres is due to make his next appearance at the Woodville meeting on Friday. His form at the recent Egmont meeting, where he ran second to Miss Ransom on the first day. and occupied a similar nosition to Vast Acre on the concluding dav, entitles him to respect in any sprint event lie contests at the Woodville fixture. Novar, who is engaged in the Woodville Cup on Friday, ran second in the same event last year to Magna Charta. He is rattier partial to Hie Woodville ! track, having other placed performances | to his credit there. j F. D. Jones has made arrangements to leave Lyttelton on Thursday of next week with Limerick and Zaragoza, connecting at Wellington the following day with the steamer for Sydney. Ln the meantime, Limerick is getting through useful work, with an occasional sprint, and he should be at the top of his form for his autumn campaign in Australia. His owner, Mr. H. .A. Knight, will miss his early races, but he will leave at the end of March, airiving in Sydney in time to witness the Laster meeting of the Australian Jockey Club, at which Limerick will meet the cracks of the Commonwealth in the rich weight-for-age races.
During last week Celerity II was a regular worker on the Southland track (says “Sir Modred"), but she was not extended, hep tasks being confined to cantering and trotting. She displays a slight limp, as the result of her rough passage in the Invercargill Cup race, but it is hoped that the trouble will yield to treatment.
After racing at Wanganui last Thursday, Damaris and Covent Garden developed bad colds.
In the Franklin Cup race of last, season, Transformer and Gold Jacket deadheated for first money, and they are both entered for the same race again this year. Neither of these horses has shown winning form during the present season, and unless they improve during the interval their chances do not appear over bright.
Rapier is training on nicely for autumn engagements. He has been nominated for the Peninsula Cup, but his serious objective is the Wellington Racing Club meeting, where he may bo a starter in the Thompson Handicap, as a preliminary to the Trenthani Gold Cup.
Limited was placed in both his efloits at Wanganui last week, and has only to improve a little to be very dangerous in any sprint event in the near future.
Aston, an imported gelding who has not raced since lie won the Kiritaki
Handicap at the Woodville summer meeting, figures as lop weight in the County Handicap at the autumn meeting of the same club. Aston, who is a four-year-old gelding by Landgrave, from Bridle Way, lias plenty of pace, and is likely to show up in hack races in the future.
I.ochson is reported to be doing well, being hacked around the roads in the Taranaki district. This one-tixne good hurdler is to undergo a preparation for winter racing.
Chickwheat is bowling along well in lis work at Biccarton, and will shortly jo put through a course of schooling in view of winter lacing.
The English mare, Spean Bridge, showed signs of lameness on Thursday of last week, and it is thought that she must, have knocked herself on the previous day. It did not prove serious, however, and she is now working well on the Southland tracks.
It is evidently intended to race Scat over the jumps at some future date, for be has been entered in hurdle events on each day at the To xlroha meeting. His relative, Kaikahu, has won several hurdle races in the South Island during the last 12 months, and there is every reason to expect Scat to also do well in that department of the game when he has had the necessary experience. His
GORE MEETING
sire. Day Comet, Ims sired a numlier of good jumpers, and Seal compares favourably wiHi the majority of them, for lie is the ideal type for a hurdle horse, having plenty of tsize and pace. A rider in one of the races at Kiecarlon on Saturday lust was fined lor going to scale with dirty gear. The knowledge that officials are keeping a close watch in this direction will probably have a beneficial effect in the future. O. Cox did not bring Mr. Donald’s filly, Time will Tell, back from Wanganui. and the filly will be turned out for a spell. The same trainer has Lady Desmond back on the tracks again, and the filled leg has fined down splendidly, and with ordinary luck should not cause further trouble. The Melbourne jockey, W. Scanlon, in conjunction with the trainer, E. J. O’Dwyer. recently brought oft’ atreblc at the Williamstown meeting, bv winning on Sailing Home. Margaux, and Textile. three gallopers well-known in Australia.
