MIRAMAR DRAINAGE

RAISING OF LOAN. At tlie last meeting of Hie Wellington Labour Representation Committee Councillor R. Semple gave a report, on the position with respect to the drainage at Miramar. Mr. .Semple said that the position in that suburb was deplorable. 'ln winter time streete and sections were under water, and in the summer stagnant water traceable to sewerage lay about. The evil was so bad that no cost should prohibit the carrying out of the works necessary to remove it. The city engineer liad prepared plans, and a report on the whole scheme would be shortly nv.-i liable. It would cost from £BO,OlO to £90.000 to do the work. Pointing out the difiicultics which might arise if such an urgent proposal were put to the ratepayers. Mr. Semple urged that the Health Department, which ho was sure was conscious of Ibe danger involved, should make it possible on tlie ground of health for tlie council itself to raise the money. lie suggested that the Labour Party should appeal to tlie Heallh Department to take this course. A motion was unanimously adopted requesting the Health Department to make a pronouncement which would have the ell'ect of an authorisation to the City Council Io raise the money and put tho work in hand.
