UNEMPLOYMENT IN UNITED STATES
MANY WORKLESS IN NEW YORK GOVERNOR TAKES ACTION PUBLIC WORKS TO BE SPEEDED UP By Telegraph.—press association. Copyright. (Rec. February 20, 7.45 p.m.) New-York, February 19. Upon receipt of the report of the Industrial Commissioner, Mr. Hamilton, Governor Smith took steps to relieve the unemployment situation. He advised all county supervisors to speed up public works and thus provide more jobs. The Governor also issued orders that members of Cabinet hasten the State building construction projects. The report stated that conditions in New York State are worse than at any time since 1921. A New York message, dated February 7, stated that a Labour Bureau group of statistical research workers connected with labour unions announced its estimate that four million persons are unemployed in the United States to-day, or 10 per cent, of those gainfully employed. The bureau claims that the situation is serious, and merits investigation. The figures have no official authorisation. It was interesting to note (the message concluded) that Governor Smith has begun an investigation of the unemployed position covering the whole of the New York State.
