BIG EXTENSION OF SYSTEM ADDITIONAL SECONDARY ROADS THE BOARD’S DECISIONS A great extension of the main highways system was decided upon by the Main Highways Board at its last monthly meeting. The board met at Wellington on February 16 and 17, Mr. F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, presiding. The main business dealt with by the board was the declaration of additional main highways consequent upon the introduction of the petrol tax during last session of Parliament. About two months ago the board requested district highway councils to make recommendations for new highways covering a mileage of about 50 per cent, of the present system, or approximately 3000 miles. The lengths recommended by the district highway councils, however, totalled 4300 miles. The board selected a total mileage of 2600 for immediate declaration, and is making further investigations concerning the other recommendations. Subsequently a further length of secondary roads will be selected to bring the secondary system up to about 3000 miles, but tlie declaration of the roads already selected will not be delayed on this account.
The board gave its approval to sur-face-sealing the Manawatu Gorge Road.
