GREAT WOOL CLEARANCE

FOURTH WELLINGTON SALE KEEN COMPETITION: SPIRITED BIDDING INCREASE ON JANUARY PRICES '■ “A wonderful sale” was the general comment on the fourth wool sale of the season which opened in the Town Hall on Thursday night and concluded yesterday. This remark aptly sums up the position. Bidding was intensely keen throughout from a full bench of buyers representing all sections of the trade and all wool-using countries. Prices showed ah all-round increase, ranging from Id. to 2d. on fine wools and Id. to lid. on other descriptions, and what amounted practically to a clean sweep was made of the whole catalogue of 27,134 bales. For example, one firm passed one bale in a catalogue of over 2000, and another 15 bales out of a total of 3786 bales.

When the sale was resumed at 9 o’clock yesterday morning, any doubts that the market would not be as firm as on the previous evening owing to the hunger for wool being appeased, were soon dispelled. Competition from all sections of the trade was fully as brisk and the bidding was just as keen and sustained. The resu.t was that the market remained firm and at a high level throughout the sale. A very pleasing feature _ was the general spread of competition, every section competing to the fullest extent, which gave the impression that no downward tendency in the market was likely to be in evidence for some time to come. , The chairman of the Wellington Wool Brokers’ Association (Mr. R. G. Anderson) remarked to a Dominion representative that the general trend of the sale might be summed up in the fact that practically the whole catalogue was disposed of under the hammer. The passings were much less than one per cent, of the lots submitted. The sale was practically a total clearance. „ ‘ The offerings at the sale consisted very largely of crossbreds, there being also some halfbreds from Nelson and (Marlborough and a small quantity of merino from Marlborough. As the catalogue was limited by the (New Zealand Wool Committee to 27,000 bales and closed on January 2G, most of the wool offered was shorn at the end of last year and was all light in condition and bright in colour. There was wool for everybody, but the quality of the crossbreds was eminently suitable for Bradford and the Continent. There was a fair proportion of super crossbreds suitable for American requirements, and America did not neglect these. Hogget wool was very strongly in demand. American and Bradford buyers competed strongly for good long-staple hogget wool, and some extremely good prices were realised for these lines. Bradford, Germany, (France and Italy competed very eagerly for top-making crossbreds. ’ Scarcely a line was neglected in any of the catalogues. Even Lincolns came into their own and were selling in the vicinity of 17d. Haltbreds were required by Dominion mills and by Bradford and the Continent, and sold at high prices. As far as lambs’ wool was concerned, buyers seemed to have no limits. One lino of crossbred lambs* wool, brought the record price of 26d., while many other lots sold in the vicinity of 2ed. The only class of wool that did not reach parity with other wools iwas Down lambs, and this sold near 21(1. to 23d. Necks brought very high prices—over the value of piece wools in many instances. Bellies and pieces sold well, but the increase in prices for these was not so marked. Speaking generally, the advance in prices on the January sale can be quoted ae follows:. Southdown, 2d.; haltl>reds, Id. to IJd.; crossbreds. Id. to lid.; low crossbreds and Lincolns, IJd. to 2d.; crossbred lambs, Id. to 2d.; bellies pieces and locks, Id.; crutchmgs, Id. to lid.j merinos and Down lambs, no change. „ , , “Undoubtedly the sale was the best this season,’’ remarked one authority, “and in view of the generally good tone, no one seemed to fear a set-back in prices.’’

RANGE OF PRICES The following is the official range of

BROKERS’ REPORTS ’Additional reports have been received from brokers as under: —

DALGETY AND COMPANY LIMITED. “The buoyant tone established when sales opened in the new year has been well maintained since the resumption of auctions and prices! for all grades of wool excepting merinos have recorded a pronounced hardening tendency. A. feature of the sales has been the free selling that has taken place and the absence of withdrawn lots. All sections of buyers are operating with the utmost freedom and competition has been very animated. “For the February Sale we brought forward a very good representative catalogue of 5.400 bales, the wools being drawn from a very wide area. Many parcels of super wools were submitted, including Merinos, Haltbreds and Romneys and prices recorded generaly exceeded the most sanguine expectation's. We practically cleared our catalogue under excited competition and for certain wools it was evident that buyers held very elastic limits. “A pleasing feature of the sale was American competition and this trade have at this sale made a heavy buy. They were hard to stop on light super wools of from 40/44 to -10/48 duality and secured a large portion of the ottering. Wo should say that the U.S.A, have at this sale made one of their largest purchases of the season. Bradford as usual, secured tho largest

weight of the offering, the wools generally being well suited for their trade. Germany and France dominated the position when it came to the fine carding wools of medium style and in lambs France made the pace very hot and pushed prices up to record rates for the season.

“Super and medium lambs were eager!’? enquired for and in our catalogue 25 d. was paid on many occasions for super lots. Halfbreds—of which we offered a fair quantity—sold remarkably well, and although at time of writing range of prices has not been compiled, we should say that rates when compared with our January Sale were up from Id. to 1|(1. per lb. We had a few nice Merinos in from Marlborough, the Brancott clip being one of good combing length and style, but a little heavy in condition, the top line making 24 d. Prices all round are now so good that growers are only too willing to market at first opportunity. “It is apparent that many overseas buyers have for some time under-estimated the strength of this season’s wool position. Yorkshire and United States representatives have persistently held aloof, presumably in the hope that cheaper wools would be available later in the season. It will be remembered that values advance in November, but this was considered merely a ‘splash in the pan* to cover urgent orders which, of course, proved altogether incorrect. Hopes were then held out that the new year would provide cheaper raw material, but this theory has also been exploded, as the market is stronger than ever and Bradford and American consigners have been forced to come into the market to secure their requirements. . “Brokers’ valuations In many instance?* were much below sale-room price and many growers would be agreeably surprised when thy received advice of realisations. In Halfbreeds the ‘Ugbrooke’ clip from Blenheim met excited competition In our catalogue. It was a fine quality wool with character and style but a little generous in 'condition. The main lines sold at—--7 bales 26%d.» 41 bales 25%d., 15 bales hoggets, 2O bales Ist pieces, 19id. Our binned Halfbreds also sold -well: IS bales 25%d., 19 B/s 24%d. “The demand for hogget wool was keen and many lofty prices were secured, notably: 5 bales JH/IWIROA 22d., 4 bales BHS 22% d. In extra fine Crossbreds: ORUAMATUA 5 bales A.A. ewes made 22% d.. and MARUS A. ewes 21%. The well-known EASTRY clip, as usual, opened up attractively, 2G bales of ewes making 2D%d., and 9 bales of lambs 25d. A super line of South Downs JRW made the good price of 27. “Our Binned and Intorlptted wools met keen competition, buyers bidding on same with confidence.

“We make Crossbreds on the average up fully l%d. when compared with January rates. Light fine nieces suitable for the

•reach trade were at times 2d. dearer, but very little change can be quoted on medium sorts.

It was anticipated that the sale would be a good one, as sinco the January sale in Wellington, the market had shown an unmistakably strong tone, though the operations of buyers had been largely in the finer wools of the Hout l ! Combined catalogues totalling slightly over 27.0C0 bales were submitted, towards which we contributed a catalogue of 3.786 bales. Our offering consisted chiefly of cross-bred wool, with some few half-bred and Corriedale clips, and a fair quantity of lambs' wool. Although our offering was not on the whole of so high a standard as our January catalogue, we had many clips of bright and attractive style, which elicited the keenest competition, and realised some very substantia! prices. There were in this sale some parcels in very seedy condition, and taking this into consideration these wools sold remarkably well. Tlie bidding was very well spread, with all sections participating—Bradford was well to the fore, and secured a good weight of wool. Continental operators were very keen on all the lower grade wools and skirtings, with France keenly buying lambs, fine quality fleece wool and good pieces. Australian buyers were interested in lambs’ and half-bred wool, and competed freely in these sorts with the French houses. America was in the market for best class cross-breds and probably a good weight of wool will go in this direction.

We experienced an exceptionally keen sale right through, and practically cleared our catalogue at auction—the passed in lots amounting only to 15 bales. Some prices realised in our catalogue are Quoted hereunder:— llekenga: Xb.E., 173 d.: lambs. 2td. 17 Nikau, Xb. E.A., 18RL; Xb. Sdy.. Mid. JB/N, Xb. A.E., 18*d.; Xb. 8.E.. L7d.: Xb. “There was a very full attendance of buyers, representing all consuming centres, and competition throughout the sale was very keen and sustained.. All sections of the trade operated strongly, competition from Continental buyers again being marked, especially for lambs wool and oddments, which sold at extreme rates, especially for super lambs. American and Russian Interests were in evidence to secure suitable wools, but Bradford pushed them hard for these lots.

“The sale must be considered as being the best so far of the season, and compared with our previous Wellington sales the values realised show an increase of from Id. to 2d. per lb., the greatest increase being shown in qualities from 50s. to 5Ss. Merino wools, which were of medium quality, made no advance on previous sales. The wools catalogue, though of very good condition, were not so bright and stylish as the offerings of the earlier sales. Our classed and binned wools were very keenly sought after, and the extreme prices realised for these will be appreciated by our numerous clients, who avail themselves of this method of treatment.

LTD. “The sharp advance in prices experienced at the southern sales during the past week or so was fully enjoyed by brokers and growers at to-day’s sale, practically lhe whole of the offering changing hands nt prices well in advance of those ruling last month. From the beginning of the sale until the close the most animated competition experienced for many years was in evidence, coming from all sections of the benches, there being no cessation or slackening in the keen competition, which was fully sustained throughout the entire offering. It was the dearest sale held in the Dominion so far this season, and prices ruling were fully a penny and occasionally more in sellers’ favour, as compared with our sale last month. Fino wools showed the most marked advance, and were occasionally 2d. per lb. dearer, whilst ordinary top-making wools were ruling at from Jd. to a penny better. Lambs wool, though a little Irregular, sold extremely well, as did pieces and bellies, and altogether the sale was ti most satisfactory one.
