MANGAHAO POWER

COMPLETION OF THIRD DAM EFFECT OF RESTRICTED LOAD As a result of the recent reduction in the load carried by the Mangahao hydro-electric station, some 4 feet of storage has been accumulated in the dams. These, however, are still down 26 feet, no benefit having been derived from the recent light rain. The third dam, which is expected to be completed in about a week’s time, will have treble the capacity of the other two. A total of 1,500,000,000 gallons of water will be available when all the dams are full, made up of 1,000,000,000 gallons from the new dam, and 500,000,000 gallons jointly from the two existing dams. The work at Waikaremoana is being pushed ahead. The intake race, diversion dam, and tunnel are nearing completion, and good progress is being made with the pipe line, which is expected to be finished during the coming winter. The transformer station is nearing completion, and the transformers are about to be transported from Wairoa to the site. The power station building will probably be available for the erection of the machinery about the end of April, when delivery of the water wheels and generators will be made. No rain of any consequence has fallen at Mangahao since December 8 last.
