requirements of customs. Reference to the complaint recently made bv Sir Benjamin Fuller at Nelson, that before he landed his car in New Zealand he had to deposit £'2so in cash to ensure that the requirements of the Customs laws would be fulfilled, was made at last night’s meeting of the North Island Motor Union. The president (Mr. A. J. Toogood) said that it should be publicly known that the cause of this, up to the present, was due to Sir Benjamin Fuller’s own country, Australia, declining to enter into a reciprocal arrangement with the North and South Island Motor Un■ms in regard to both countries exchanßing bonds, covering duty deposits remired bv the Customs of each country. For several years New Zealand endeavoured to get Australia to co-operate, but without successs. The suggested arrangements had now been prepared for the approval of the unions of both countries, and it was hoped some finality would soon be reached.
